By your description it sounds like a rod or crank bearing has gone bad. This is a VERY serious issue and you should have it looked at immediately by a good mechanic. If either of these is the issue, the repair is expensive and time consuming, just so you know in advance. But if it is not addressed, it will result in the destruction of the lower half of your engine. There is no good way to predict when, either, but it is not likely to last more than a few hundred miles.
If the knock sounds like its coming from the top of the engine, under the head cover/s it could likely be a lifter (this is what opens the valves in the cylinders via the camshaft). If its coming from the bottom of the engine (crankshaft) it could mean there is a bad bearing on one of the pistons. Try to pinpoint or approximate where the sound is coming from in order to get a more accurate diagnosis.
hows yr mileage? try cleaning the automatic transmission fluid (ATF) by using vacuum method.. it can consume upto 8 litres of ATF, normally ATF replacement is 4 litres, with vaccum will be more than 6 litres.. if itsnot helping try carbon clean, ask yr mechanic or kia service station
Sounds to me like a very common problem has occured to your neighbor. If this is a SOHC engine, one of the valve seats in the number 4 cylinder has fallen out. I'm sure it has damaged the head and the piston. Stop trying to run it or you might blow a hole in the cylinder wall or break a rod or both.
