Check your boots for cracks by squeezing and rolling with your fingers and bend them back and forth and for really a soft condition and check your plug gaps and also look for antifreeze or moisture in that cylinder and inspect the coil for possible cracks in the housing and wire insulation going to the coil from the plug connector and the connector itself for cracks or loose fitting if the tab lock is broken use a wire zip tie to secure it

does the whinning noise decrease or go away when u decelarate? this is the key to a proper diagnosis. if it does, then your problem eather ring & pinion gears or related bearings (these are all in the center part of the diff.) if it does not change, the problem is in the wheel bearings, or rough tread on the tires. the former is expensive(4 or 5 hundred), the latter is not so bad(a hundred or so). u could try raising it up & supporting it under axel housing, have a friend run it up to about 40mph as u listen with a hose or stethescope to pinpoint the noise

solenoid switch that engages the 4WD more likely will need replacing. fairly cheap to fix replace.

Possible solution..Expedition uses a vacuum solenoid on the firewall that controls vacuum to the 4-wheel drive actuator. Vacuum "unlocks" the 4-wheel drive, so you may have a leak in the line to the actuator so the 4-wheel drive is always on. Seems backwards, I know.

I have a similar problem that I am having with my 97. The light comes on for 4WD but it will not engage. Have you figured out what your problem might be?
