Don't take this the wrong way, but if the engine is not running now, you'd probably spend less time money if you put a small-block Chevy or Ford engine in it instead. It's a fairly common modification, I bet there's lots of information available on it, maybe even specific brackets and stuff for the swap.

If it was MY car, that's probably what I would do.

Jag 2001 s type turns over but won't start

Hi there:
You will have to pinpoint what the engine is missing... spark / fuel / compression.

All three of these are tested when the engine is being cranked over. There are two way of checking for fuel. Fuel pressure and fuel trigger. Both are very important and must be present for the engine to start. Fuel pressure is self explanatory. You just hook up the gage and see what the reading is. Fuel trigger is check with a noid light. The injector gets unplugged and the noid light gets plugged in to the injector clip. With the engine cranking over, this light must blink. This is the signal to the injectors from the computer. You can have all the fuel pressure in the world, but it wont matter if the injector is not pulsing gas into the cylinder like it should.

Compression tester, spark tester, fuel pressure gage and noid light are all accessible at your local auto store. All three tests play a very important part in diagnosing a no start condition. Be extremely careful when doing these tests.

Hope this helps; also keep in mind that your feedback is important and I`ll appreciate your time and consideration if you leave some testimonial comment about this answer.

Thank you for using FixYa, have a nice day.

My x-type diesel has been struggling for a few months running poorly and struggles to start (more so when warm). Jag told me the EGR and inlet manifold was coked up - which I have now cleaned. runs much...

COULD HAVE BAD FUEL WRONG TYPE FUEL COULD NEED NEW AIR FILTER. DIESEL ENGINE NEEDS AIR TO OPERATE.IF AIR FILTER RESTRICTED.DIESEL ENGINE WONT RUN AND CLOGGED FUEL FILTER CAUSE STARTING PROBLEMS PROBLEMS WITH TURBOCHARGER OR TURBOCHARGER ACTUATOR WOULD CAUSE ENGINE RUN VERY SLOW NO POWER ON TAKE OFF.I SAY PROBLEM IN FUEL SYSTEM OR AIR INTAKE SYSTEM.IF YOU HAD ANY OTHER PROBLEMS THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT WILL FLASH ON.

Hi my jag xjr 4lrt wont start it has fuel supply it has a sprak it turns over but will not start any ideas ive been told it may be the imobiliser

It takes three things to make an engine run. Fuel, spark and air. If you have fuel and spark at the cylinder, there's no reason it should not start. One or the other is missing. The only way to tell if the fuel and spark are reaching the cylinder is to pull a spark plug. Try to start the engine then pull a plug. If you are getting fuel, the spark plug will be wet and smell of gasoline. If it's dry, no fuel is reaching the cylinder. Put the plug wire back on the spark plug and lay the plug down where you can observe it while cranking the starter. If you are getting spark, yo will see the voltage arc across the tip of the spark plug. Perform this test and find out which one is missing and then you can trace down the problem.

Ive turned of my jag in park mode, now i cant restart it

Does your dash light up to indicate you have a battery source or power? If yes you have power try starting it in neuatral or in another gear. If it starts in neatrual maybe your selector going bad. If it starts in other gears repair the shift selector. Three If no power indicated check fuses. four will motor crank or turn over if yes look for a drivability problem. If no final maybe bad ignition switch. Need to replace ignition switch. Probably time for service

My jag wont start

It could be an ignition related issue or fuel.
When it doesn't start does it crank, do you have the ignition lights?
The most common problem of intermittant no star probems is the crank sensor on the front of the engine, they can break down over a period of time and fail when warm. if not then I would fit a fuel pressure guage to the car and run it. Then see what the reading is when warm. If it is nothing (should be 38-40) then I would replace the fuel pump relay.
The fuel pumps typically don't fail intermittantly, they just fail!
