1997 subaru lecacy rear diff seems to be locked when taking hard turns, binds axles up, just as a 4x4 truck would do

2000 3.0 ford 4x4 ranger front end is binding up when driving forward and unbinds in it a cv axle or vacuum hub assembly.

4 X 4 vehicles are only meant to be in 4 wheel drive on loose surfaces
on hard surfaces where the tires are not permitted to slip there is a torque wing up in the transmission , drive shafts and diffs
this results in hard gear shifting, noisy drive lines and early failures in drive shaft, diffs and transmissions
if you go far enough in reverse it will start to bind up again

If your driving on sealed roads with 4wd engaged it will bind up the drive train and cause these issues.

yep, subs have a valve on the centre differential that distributes drive from the engine to the front and rear diffs. when you get that shuddering on hard lock the valve needs replacing.

Can you switch a rear diff from a 1997 subaru legacy wagen with a 2.2l inter changeable with a 1997 subaru legacy outback with a 2.5l ?

the biggest draw back that you will have to check first is the ratio of the diffs you want to change. If they are not the same but will fit then you will destroy the 3rd diff in the transmission from excessive use.

Why is there no drive to my rear wheels in my Subaru AWD?

IT is a constant all wheel drive car which means that all 4 wheels are driven all of the time . There is a differential in the centre that allows for different speeds between front and back while driving such as going over bumps . When you engage the 4wd button you are in effect locking that centre diff so that both front and rear axles drive together. If you have it so that 4wd is not engaged (selected ) and there is no drive action to the rear wheels that then indicates that the shaft in that centre diff is not connected in the side gears ( stripped /broken) and it has been in 4wd all the time so that it could be sold

Only drives in 4x4 low take it out of 4x4 will not move

Check that it is actually getting into 2WD high and if the rear drive shaft is turning then check for an axle or diff problem in the rear end

change the fluid in the rear axle with factory fluid also make sure all 4 tires have thread wear within 2/32 same brand and model size tire as well

Rear axle removal

just uninstall the diff cover .the center pin. there will be a lock on the axle inside end tht is in the diff once the pin is out u can get to the lock .remove the disc and the clipper guide . and pull the axle out ..

1997 Mazda MPV just purchased and did not come with owners manual. Has electronic 4wd on column stick... What gear does it need to be in to engage 4wd or can it be done while driving??? Also shows Diff...

I have one of these vans you can put it in 4x4 anytime while driving or stopped or taken out of 4x4. the diff lock does not have to be on to have 4x4 .this **** locks in the rear diff,giving you all 4 wheels,this diff **** should be pushed when stopped,and taken out when stopped,it is always taken out before the 4x4 is . ps the 4x4 light on the dash should not be blinking if it is your acuator is stuck it can be freed up for 30.00
