It is located where the lower radiator hose connects to the engine. I just changed one in my girlfriends 2001 4.7L Dakota. She says she has had to have it replaced three other times in the past six years, so it's a good thing your learning where it is now!
Also, if you want to be sure that the thermostat is the problem, just put it in a pot of water on the stove, with a thermometer, and see if it opens when it's supposed to (195 deg. F, for this engine).

It could be the thermostat, or the electric cooling fans are not coming on, if they are working, change the thermostat.
To find it------ follow the top radiator hose to the thermostat housing, the thermostat is in the housing.

1. Is fan turning when engine runs?
2. Is belt in place to turn the water pump?
If so, sounds like most likely a thermostat problem, thermostat is normally located at the end of the hose that runs from the radiator to the top of the engine, or more appropriately, the water pump.

IAC(idle air controll valve)TCV(throttle control valve)get some carb cleaner and spray into the throttle body. You have to remove the hose from the air cleaner. These valves tend to get gunked up.It is best if you can remove them to clean them better.
