Previous owner put new distributor in but never timed it. would run a few second then die, restart and do the same. I reset it and it runs good but the timing mark does not move when I try to time it

Check to make sure you have the firing order correct. If so, go ahead and remove each wire to isolate the misfiring cylinder. From what I can understand from your post, it seems that so far, you have done everything correctly. Did it run well before you did the gasket? Running rich can be a product of a vacuum leak as well. To find it, spray some carb cleaner around perimeter of manifold, and near any vacuum source. If idle changes, that's where the leak is! If its leaking from the new gasket, you might consider, loosening up the bolts and re-tightening them in a cross pattern, side to side, beginning at the center, working towards both ends. split the torque value and tighten twice: if value is 30lbs, do once at 15, the second time @20. I hope this helps.
Good luck

pull the distributor, and move it closer to the mark. This way when you make your final adjustments you can just use your light and cap movements.

Sounds like you have your timing off. If it is backfiring, that means that 2 of your wires are crossed, causing the plugs to fire on the exhaust stroke versus the compression stroke. Recheck your timing.

This is the specs...not too sure on what else you are asking about:
Save to desktop and then zoom.
SOURCE: engine timing
put car at top dead center then put the rotor on distributor to the first piston firing
