SOURCE: I took a intake off

Check to make sure you have the firing order correct. If so, go ahead and remove each wire to isolate the misfiring cylinder. From what I can understand from your post, it seems that so far, you have done everything correctly. Did it run well before you did the gasket? Running rich can be a product of a vacuum leak as well. To find it, spray some carb cleaner around perimeter of manifold, and near any vacuum source. If idle changes, that's where the leak is! If its leaking from the new gasket, you might consider, loosening up the bolts and re-tightening them in a cross pattern, side to side, beginning at the center, working towards both ends. split the torque value and tighten twice: if value is 30lbs, do once at 15, the second time @20. I hope this helps.
Good luck

SOURCE: distributor installation

pull the distributor, and move it closer to the mark. This way when you make your final adjustments you can just use your light and cap movements.

Sounds like you have your timing off. If it is backfiring, that means that 2 of your wires are crossed, causing the plugs to fire on the exhaust stroke versus the compression stroke. Recheck your timing.

97 toyota tacoma, reset distributor. Lacks about half inch of going all the way in. can you bump the starter like older model cars to get it in.

no
that alters the crank position and then the distributor timing will be out
check for the "O" ring for not allowing the unit to slip in
or alter the rotor button slightly to get the gear teeth to line up

Trying to set the timing on 97 tacoma. took distributor bolts out so I could move it. Timing mark is not moving

not the correct procedure
put the timing mark on the pulley at the timing mark pointer ( (10 degrees advanced is optional)
then turn the distributor until the rotor button points directly to no one lead
if it doesn't then you are 180 degrees out on the crankshaft

How do u reset timing of distributor after replaceing it. on a ford e350 94'

You will need a timing light....Start the engine and allow it to warm to normal operating temperature....disconnect the vacuum adavance--then slowly rotate the distrubtor while using the timing light to set it.
The timing mark for top dead center will be on the harmonic balancer, the pointer will be attached to timing chain cover, Set the timing as follows per engine size.
5.0L- BTDC 10° ± 2°
5.8L- BTDC 10° ± 2°
7.5L- BTDC 10° ± 2°

Turn off the engine and tighten the distributor bolt. Recheck the timing to verify that the timing did not move while tightening the distributor. Replace the shorting bar or vacuum line.

I hope this helps,

1996 chevy c1500 5.7. i replaced the lower intake gasket. now with it all put back together it wont start. i took the distributor out and set the motor to TDC and set the distributor to the #1 cylinder....

You need to pull the distributor back out, put motor to TDC
now you say its always a tooth off...the timing chain may be alittle worn..so when you are trying to put the distribor back in ...put a socket or something... to move the crankshaft.....move it back and forth untill the distributor falls in....AT the number one plug on cap....
Hope this helps you out ??

How do you set the distributor timing on a s10 4.3l

1st look under the hood, and read the veci label for timing instructions, then take a piece of white chalk or white paint , and mark the line that is on the harmonic balancer, then hook up a timing light to the positive and negative cables on your battery, red for positive, and black for negative, then hook the clip or adapter of the timing light to the # 1 spark plug wire, start vehicle, and loosen bolt at bottom of distributor, and turn the distibutor to where the white mark on the harmonic balancer will line up with the timing marks for that vehichle, be sure to look under the hood to refer by what the manufactures timing is for your S-10, after you have the timing marks lined up, then retighten the bolt at the bottom of the distributor, and then check your timing for accuracy, if the timing moved while you tightened down the distributor, you will have to re loosen the bolt and re adust the timing to it's correctness, sometimes , it helps when you have 2 people to do this, 1 can watch the timing marks and hold the timing light, and the other can loosen, and tighten the bolt , while both is communicating to each other in order to get the timing right.

Accidentally moved distributor position when installing new plug wires. How do you know where it should be?

Well just to clarify, if the rotor moved, you don't need to do anything. Just put the cap back on and reassemble anything that you took apart.
If, however, you had loosened the distributor hold down bolt and the actual distributor itself rotated, you will need to set your ignition timing with a timing light. The setting on your vehicle with a V6 is 10 degrees before top dead center(10 BTDC). If you are standing in front of the vehicle and looking at the engine's timing plate, that would be the mark with the 10 to the LEFT of the 0 (TDC). Hope this helps.

Ive changed cap, rotor, plug wires, and plugs. Now my engine light is on and it has a slight miss?? firing order is good, is there a wrong way to put a rotor and cap on??? it is a 97 5.0L gmc. thanx

Yeah there is a wrong way. First try to rotate the distributor while it is running but only move it just alittle to the left or right. Also dont lossen the distributor bolt so that it can freely move. When it start sounding better then tighten the bolt and test it.
