The european ford escort '80-'86 had similar problems with that. problem is the hydraulic lifter cilinder burned engine oil settle inside those cilinders you have to remove the Camshaft you will find them and press them in with a little force and keep it overnight in a bucked of diesel to clean them up .blowdry them and put them back in the engine. check on damages while they are dry. they have to move when you aply pressure with your hands
WARNING when you start the engine because these cilinders are empty.your engine will make a hell of a noise .DON't be ALARMED this will go away in 1 or 2 minutes success

Is there a good addative for noisey tappets

first check that you have proper oil pressure, a clean oil and filter, if it still taps it may be due to engine wear or gummed lifters,
try a little of this

25590584-i1nscponzdadur3znvbgvktl-4-0.jpg seafoam in the crank case will clean gummy lifters and stop clicking,
or try this to stabilize and stop clicks caused by worn engine parts
Lucas oil stabalizer, and both products are sold at nearly every auto parts store

I have a 2003 gmc Sierra half ton 4.8 liter that has a knock that sounds like lifters

There is,If you do the lifter you could be after something else,The noise sounds like a collapsed lifter,A collapse lifter can cause a misfire,The 2003 GMC sierra or I should say the 4.8 engines suffer from a cut O-ring between the oil pump screen and the oil pump causing oil areation, resulting in lifter noise,The noise will be present a cold start and then diminish at warm up.12_3_2012_8_08_44_am.gif

BAD LIFTERS WILL MAKE A NOISE.IF VALVE LIFTERS AND LOWER SPRING SEALS BEEN REPLACED AND LIFTERS STILL NOISEY.EITHER ENGINE OIL TOO THICK OR ENGINE NEED OIL CHANGE + FILTER CHANGE.DIRTY OIL CAUSE LIFTER NOISE OR OIL PASSAGES IN THE CYLINDER HEAD STOPPED UP NOT ALLOWING LIFTERS TO GET THE RIGHT AMOUNT OF OIL.OR OIL PRESSURE TO LOW DUE TO FAULTY OIL PUMP.OIL PRESSURE SHOULD BE 29 PSI @2000 RPM. TRYING ADDING SOME SEAFOAM CLEANER IN CRANK CASE IF OIL PASSAGES STOPPED UP IT WILL CLEAN OUT OIL SLUDGE.GO TO AUTO PARTS STORE TELL THEM YOU NEED SEAFOAM.AFTER 500 MILES YOU NEED TO CHANGE OIL AND FILTER AGAIN. SEE IF THIS HELP BEFORE SPENDING ALOT OF MONEY .

All lifters started clicking at once

Sounds more likely to be a timing rattle rather then all the lifters at once making noise, if your EGR valve is bad this will happen and if the timing is off it will also do this, I can't buy the theory all 16 hydraulic lifters are noisey unless you over reved it something fierce, or ran it out of oil, or had someone loosen all the rockers.

Did you check your oil level? Is the oil light on? (No oil pressure) try changing oil & install an engine additive for noisey lifters, If none of this works need to place lifters

98 jeep tj 2.5 eng noisey lifter can it be ajusted

Lifters on your engine are non-adjustable. If noise is not loud or is intermittent, sometimes just changing oil and using an additive like marvel oil will clean it up.If noise persists, check pivot contact points on "bridge" that connects each pair of rocker arms together for wear.Replace if worn. disable the ignition system and have someone crank engine over. Observe that all rockers are going up and down the same distance. The ones to check are the ones that are not. If all is ok there, you must go deeper into engine and check lifters for end wear. If you find wear, lifter and camshaft must be replaced Sometimes if the ends are still in good condition, the lifter itself may have an internal problem. If that is the case, replace the lifter.
Before you begin, check oil pressure. A pressure of 15lbs or less is not acceptable.(warmed up, at idle) Pressure must be substantially higher both cold and hot. I recommend at least 30psi at idle hot, 40psi while driving. Lower pressures indicate serious wear on internal bearing surfaces. Replacing the oil pump may temporarily hide this problem but will not cure it!!!
Good luck
