Question about 1986 Ford F 250

2 Answers

My 1986 F250, 6.9L diesel is very very hard to start since purchase a month ago. I have gotten on a ford forum sight and this is what I have done. Replace the glow plug sensor and relay. Removed an aftermarket electric fuel pump that was installed prior to the mechanical. Installed a new mechanical fp. Replace all supply and return rubber fuel lines. The glow plugs were replace recently with ac/delco. The rubber return lines between the injectors were also replace, and I am not sure about the orings on the return lines. As of this am, without either to boost its starting, which I hate to do, it would not start. Where do I turn to next?

The starter and batteries are fine, and crank the engine great. The indication from the forum is leading to air in the system from drain back, thus replacing all but the return orings. The glow plug, light and audio from going on and off, cycles with the longest cycle first and slowly degenerates to less time if you allow it to continue to cycle. Still no luck starting. boosstuff

The manual fuel pump is bad and the innert tank filter is plugged up. causes the main pump to starve for fuel so replace the mechanical pump on the side of the motor remove electric pump and hope and pray you did not kill the main pump from fuel starvation. you will need to check for leaking injectors as well and then replace with new coppers.

Try replacing the starters.

How about the battery? Have you checked? Try replacing it too?

You may want to consider changing over to a push button system. The 6.9's are renowned for having faulty gp controllers. The controller gets stuck in the on position and burns out the gps. Especially the cheaper plugs. Consider getting Wellmans, I haven't found any better. Can find them from a seller on ebay for a great deal. If you don't want to use a push button, the same guy sells a package deal of plugs and controller. Don't use Ether - Ether will destroy your engine.

Tech Tips: Use only Motorcraft or AC-Delco glow plugs on this engine. When working properly, the glow plug controller monitors amperage flow to the glow plugs and cuts power to them when it has achieved that set point. If the internal relay of the controller "sticks" and continues to deliver power, the glow plugs will overheat and burn out. Technical Service Bulletin (TSB) 98-4-20 offers a conversion kit to upgrade the 83-88 6.9L Diesel 6-volt glow plug system to the more dependable 7.3L 12-volt system.

Have a 1986 F350 4wd crew cab with a 460 , A couple months ago I replaced the coil , plugs roter and cap it was running great . This afternoon I tried to start her up it cranks but won't start .

So start by checking for spark and fuel. If no spark or fuel you will need to troubleshoot that system further but before we can do that you need to verify if you have both of those.

Did the poor starting coincide with the cambelt change ,as it sounds like you may have a camshaft/fuel pump timing issue. If the pump/camshaft/crankshaft are not locked in place when you change the belt they can easily move a tooth or two.If the problem didnt coincide with the belt change then it might be a fuel problem.

The Powerstroke motor has a few things that can make it hard to start. trying to diagnose it over the internet can be a daunting task. I would go to "the Diesel stop" on the internet, they are a forum dedicated to just Ford Diesel trucks. If you register (free) there is a section for your year. I am a member there along with over 100,000 members and you will probably get the answer you need there.

1986 FORD F 350 DIESEL 6.9 REPLACED INJECTOR PUMP AND STILL DOSENT GET FUEL ALSO WHEN IT DOSE START THE IDLE IS AT 3000

check to see that your mechanical fuel pump is working on the lower right side of the engine. VERY problematic pump due to design and location. Have you replaced your fuel filter with the injector pump swap? cause you need to do that , its a must If your getting fuel to your injector pump you have to bleed the lines to each cylinder to bleed out the air in the system. If that all checks out then you need to set the timing to 8 deg using a timing light and a diesel injection pulse width adapter timing tool. purchase a haynes manuel for 6.9l/7.3l diesel engines to follow the correct procedure for setting timing to manufactures spec. You will have to disconnect sensor at certain times during the timing stage so make sure it is done right!
PS - I hope you marked a reference line on the pump to line up with the line on the housing cause that will get you close to start! good luck

Difficulties in starting my diesel hiace

Clem, you didn't say, but your car may have a fuel injection system, and in that case, this article speaks to the morning difficulty problem and the diagnosis:

If it is a carburetor, then here's the article for that morning problem:
