Question about Pontiac Grand Am

1 Answer

Random RPM spikes during highway and city driving. While driving approx. 55 mph the RPM's are around 1600. The RPM's randomly jump 300-400 which only last a second or two sometimes it will hang around 2000 for 5 seconds and then drops back to normal. It might happen 3 or 4 times in a minute then go away for 10 minutes and then start acting up again. It is almost like it is kicking in and out of overdrive which is not the case because when I manually put it in 3rd the RPM's are a lot higher. When ever the RPM's spike it also turns off the cruise control, the problem does still occur even if cruise is off.

I have the same issue, I am starting to think it may be caused from my bad CV Joints, because one issues with bad cv joints is abrupt deacceleration, which could be starting and may be my engine just kicks out of overdrive or something. Will post when I figure out after fixing cv joint. Do you have a loud click sound when you turn sometimes???

Driving on highway at 55 mph, rpm is over 4500, then Blu a seal, engine oil all under the van.

Why was rpm so high? Trans stuck in 2nd? Crazy rear end gear? Does it always do this, or was this abnormal? As to blown seal, replace it.

High rpm at highway speed

No idea why you would drive that fast,
but 2800 is about right at that speed

Did you just get the car & never own one that
went to 2800 at that speed

Tap the brake around 55 & see if the rpm goes up,
indicating that torque converter lock-up is working

Don't do that at 70 mph

Highway driving problem. City driving ok.

If you have been to three shops,I'll assume that all the basics have been covered. Did anyone check computer stored codes? What did they see? If you are going to try to fix it yourself, you will need to get a manual and check each and every component, one by one. Also, outside of the realm of computer stuff, check converter to make sure its not partially plugged. At low rpm city driving it may be flowing just enough to get by on. Also check that fuel is clean and has no water in it.

RPM jumps

Does the RPM seem to bog down around 3000 - 3500? If so you have fuel delivery problem> Start with the filter.
