1998 Audi A4 starter spray

Cranks but won't get gas in to start. Where do you spray starter fluid? Do you have to take apart the whole air intake system?

Thanks a lot for the quick responses. I guess the quick spray isn’t the answer. It’s my sons car and I think he put some cheap gas in. Was running fine and recently serviced but just won’t turn over now. Engine cranks and tried jump start, just won’t turn over. I used to work on cars as a kid in the 70’s but now I’m completely lost. We put some Seafoam motor treatment in the tank but needs to start for that to be any use. I’m down to calling AAA now so if any other thoughts, would appreciate hearing them. Either way, you guys are great and many thanks again. Cheers!

Yes the intake must be disconnected from the air cleaner and the fluid sprayed directly into the intake.

Starting fluid (ether) is used only as a quick test of the ignition system, engine timing, compressions, etc. If the engine briefly runs after spraying the starter fluid, it can be assumed all those things, except the fuel supply, is serviceable.
As you already know there is a problem with the fuel supply that needs investigation and repair it seems hardly worth using an ether spray.

SOURCE: my 96 crown vic police interceptor, cranks

starting fluid is a thing of the past. dont use it. this car doesnt have a carb, its a throttle body/ electronic fuel injection system. you most likely have a fuel pump or fuel pressure regulator issue. test the fuel pressure, should be anywheres from 35-50 psi

Can you spray starting fluid into the air intake on a gl1800 2007

Yes. But it's only a diagnostic 'tool.' If it cranks and runs for a bit with the starter fluid, the problem is no gas getting to the engine and you go from there.

Cranks, no start on 97 GMC van with 350 Vortec. Fired up with starter fluid

if it starts with starter fluid then its a fuel problem. check the fuel pressure and volume with a gage. these require at least 56lbs pressure to open the injectors and if the pressure is at 52lbs the they will not open. these use the pressure to open the poppet injectors and have a problem with the spider lines cracking and leaking fuel inside the intake. this is probably why it won`t start on its own.

Car will start sometimes other times i will have to continue to crank the engine it cranks everytime

As it cranks, is there white or black exhaust smoke ?? If yes, the fuel injectors have solid build up on the tips. Normally, a quart bottle of injector cleaner treats 20 gallons. Pour 5 to 7 quarts of fuel injector cleaner. With cold engine (been parked for at least an hour or overnight), while cranking engine, have 2nd person spray starting fluid into air filter. DO NOT PRESS ON GAS PEDAL !!! Let the starting fluid do its job of starting the car. Starting fluid is highly combustible, so its important you don't give any gas while its cranking and 2nd person is spraying into air filter. When engine starts, stop spraying starting fluid and give a little gas. If engine begins to die, immediately spray a little starting fluid again. When engine begins to run, let it run a few minutes to let fuel injector cleaner to do its job (loosen solid carbon build up on tips of fuel injectors).

I ran outta gas on my 1998 chevy silverado v.6 vortec. i put more gas in it and pumped the accelerator a few times and it still wont start. how can i fix it is it simple

Best way to fix it when you run out of gas is this. Because you ran out of gas, means your fuel filter is out. When you run out of gas, you end of getting like a air blockage in the line. Now, professional way is to take fuel filter off and fill with gas and put back on, BUT i will tell you a back yard mechanic secret way. Is get a can of starting fluid ( you can get at any auto parts store) and while someone is in side the Pickup, have them ready to turn the key. You are outside with the hood up, and you will be spraying a little bit of the starting fluid in the air intake of directly in carb area ( if carborated) but just spray into air intake. Have them crank the engine, at same time you will spray starter fluid in air intake, just a couple of quick sprays. You will notice it will start and maybe die again. That is normal, you might have to do this a couple times to get things flowing. HOWEVER, what normally happens when you run out of gas, the fuel filter picks up all that junk that has been gathered in the bottom of fuel tank and it has clogged your filter. FOR SURE, if you replace your fuel filter, it will solve this problem. Thank You, and I hoped this helped you.

1989 tempo 2.3 4 cyl 5 speed, runs w/ starter fluid

Hi, The carb is gummed up from sitting. The best solution is to take it apart and clean it. The starter fluid indicates that it has clogged jets or stuck floats. The good news is that if it cranks with the starter fluid everything else is probably OK. Good Luck!
