Question about Nissan Maxima

2 Answers

I have a 2001 Maxima with approx 142,000 miles. When the car is warmed up good, it sometimes will either not shift out of 1st gear, or it shifts into neutral & I have to stop the car to either shut it off for a 5 -8 minute cool down, or let it shift back to 1st gear before proceeding. I have a intemittent "service engine soon" led which I had checked and the code that we got was "J74" which I was told was a transmission speed sensor malfunction or failure. I took the car to my Nissan dealership and they had the car 2 days & said they can't find anything wrong with the cvt but always find "other things" I should have fixed such as a wheel bearing or leaking cvt joint.

I had the throttle body plate/idel air control module and ecm module replaced at dealer early last year(almost $3000.00) worth. Is it possbile the ecm could be causing this problem?

Possibly get speed sensor replaced this could be causing problem without speed input to control module the module doesnt know what gear it should be in or use
have this part of speed sensor circuit tested

The speed sensor can cause this, but so many other things can as well.Have it check at a transmission shop not a dealer.

Hi and welcome!

As a first course of action I strongly suggest that you check the transmission fluid. If it's burnt please have it replaced. If the fluid looks fine then the problem will surely be on the torque converter. The torque converter controls the shifting of the car. Once replaced, a smooth ride and shifting will be noticeable.

Hope this helps and thank you for using FixYa! Have a good one!

It winds up in 1st and then shifts right from 1st into 3rd. Then never shifts into 4th. Plus rev is gone. You broke the sun shell. The transmission will need to rebuilt or replaced.

Try going to your local parts store (such as AutoZone) and ask about the transmission control solenoid. Go here for the direct link to their website with that specific part for your 91 maxima.

Gear Shift gets stuck on Maxima 2001

The gear shift electrical relay or module inside it is not reading the signal to release. You need to have the electronic relay or module repaired or the gear shift assembly replaced.
