Question about 1997 Ford Thunderbird LX

1 Answer

Heater core I own a white 1997 4.6 lit.Ford T-bird. How far or how much of the dash do i need to take apart? Once I get there is there any trick to remove it or what to look out for? I've changed the heater core in a 2001 chevy truc and a 1997 Ford F-150. I just want to know the easiest way to do this job for the my Ford T-bird.

i accomplish this painfull task of the heater core. No you dont have to tamper with A/C. Remove as much as possible to pull foward dash to get to access panel of heater core. Wich is located right in the middle of center console . Yes the center concole needs to be remove for access. ican say there is no easy way but to get it done.

Email me at fordtech2005@gmail.com and I will be happy to email you pictures on how to do it. the flat rate labor time to do this repair is 7.5 hours which basically means that the whole dash must come out, also you will need to disconnect your a/c system to remove heater core.

You will need to get a service manual as it is too complicated a job to advise here.

Heater core

This is a job best left to a pro. The heater core is in the HVAC box, under the dash. You need to COMPLETELY disassemble the dash to access the HVAC box. Usually you need to remove the front seats, drop the steering column and remove the center console [if it has one] for access to remove the dash. You also have to drain the radiator & A/C system. Reassembly will require access to an A/C vacuum pump and gauge/hose set.
This job will take a pro about 8 hours to do. Sorry, but most Ford cars are a real bit*h for the amateur mechanic to do. Once you have everything apart, you can acually see the rear side of the firewall!

The Heater Core is going out in my 1997 Ford T-Bird Lx 4.6L v8, is it a hard job to replace?

the dash has to be removed it is a big job, check the haynes manual for the procedure or the ford service manual.the cluster radio and hvac controls come out and the light switch and the steering column has to be dropped ect.some fords like the mustang can be done by wedging something into the right side of the dash and you can get in behind it and do it in 3 hours instead of 10 hours.

Replace heater core 97 ford f 150

Oh, it's a big pain, you have to remove the entire dash. Get yourself a Chilton / Haynes manual (buy one or borrow one from the library). Also take a look at this thread about this exact topic - http://www.fordf150.net/forums/viewtopic.php?t=59067

you can TRY to remove glovebox and all wiring and nesicary panels but it would probably take the same amount of time as it would to do the job properly.
