Take a look at the shift lock. When you depress the brake is there an audible click heard coming from the center column? If not there could be a few possible problems. Either your brake pedal switch is defective(brake lights coming on?) the wiring to the shift lock is open or shorted, or the shift lock itself is defective. A quick fix is to remove the small plastic cover just right of the shifter that is the shift interlock manual release. Using a small pocket screwdriver depress the white plastic button and move the shifter.

Why cant I put car in gear

Most automatic transmission cars/trucks have a solenoid lock on the shifter that requires the brake pedal to be depressed in order to move the shifter out of park. This prevents a child from accidentally knocking the car into gear if the parent is out of the car and the child is inside but not yet restrained. If the solenoid fails the shifter will not move. Most vehicles have a manual override to release the shifter (in case of battery dying, for example). Check the owners manual to see if and where the release button is.

2002 thunderbird gear shift override button location

There is no "gearshift override button" If the gear shift cannot be moved from PARK whith the key on and the brake pedal depressed, turn the key to the LOCK position and remove the key. Then re-insert the key and turn it one "click" to the OFF position (if the instrument cluster lights up, you turned it too far). The shifter will then be able to move. Place the shifter in NEUTRAL and hold the service brake while starting the engine. The shifter can then be moved to any position desired. If it is placed in PARK, you will have to repeat the procedure to get it going again.

Also, you should check your brake lamps. The shift interlock is probably not working properly due to a problem with your brake lamp circuit.

If you can't move the shifter from park to drive , check to see if your brake lights are functional. The brake switch unlocks shifter when the brakes are applied.

I am stuck in park and cant engage drive. my fluid levels are normal. engine is on. footbrake is depressed. steering lock is disengaged. ticking noise in steering column when button on gear shifter is...

You need to have the dealer check the inter lock solenoid on the shifter cable,
It is powered by the ignition and brake light switch, pushing the brake releases the solenoid and allows you to move shifter.

Will not always shift after startup, but eventually will

Sounds like you have a brake lamp switch which is going bad. The brake lamp switch supplies power to the 'shifter release' solenoid. If this switch is malfunctioning, it will not let you take it out of "Park." Simple to replace.

Check the switch under the brake pedal assembly. use a check light. black aligator clip tp ground. point of light to where the wire attachments are located at the switch. depress the brake and see if the light goes on when you press the brake. If it does not replace the switch.

Transmission problem with 2001 Ford Escort

Sounds like a problem with the shift interlock. Here's how it works:You put your foot on the brake pedal, the brake pedal switch sends voltage to a solenoid mounted on your shifter. The solenoid unlocks the shifter, and you remove it from Park. When the interlock doesnt work,it's usually the interlock solenoid mounted on the shifter malfunctioning, however the brake pedal switch,or wires to and from can also be at fault.
