Question about 2000 Ford Taurus

1 Answer

I've been having problems with the a/c and it making funny noises and then the serpentine belt broke. My husband thinks that the repair is more than just the belt being put back on and that it involves the pulley for the a/c. Is this something a person can do at home or should we opt for a repair shop. Also, is this an expensive repair?

If your husband is correct, the AC pulley is part of the AC clutch, which, typically on many vehicles, is replaced with the AC compressor as one unit. If a person is handy and familiar with cars, the compressor can be replaced at home. The cost of the part would be approximately $200 - 300 depending on the compressor ( re-manufactured, new). The AC system would have to be evacuated and re-charged, as well.
I suggest that the problem should be pinpointed so that the correct part is identified. For instance, there are other pulleys on the engine, one of which my be the cause of the problem.

Is it possible the broken belt damaged the crank or cam sensor ?
I can't see a way for the serpentine belt damaging the camshaft.
Was the engine running after the belt broke ?
Have you checked the computer for trouble codes ?

The main pully (i think its the crankshaft one) doesnt lign up with all the other ones therfore the belt broke! anything is helpfull

wow, if the main crankshaft pulley is off, that's pretty hard to do.

but, I'll take your word for it.

I think that it's more likely that the accessories attached to the engine are not aligned to the crankshaft pulley.

Look for problems with the serpentine tensioner pulley, if you have the serpentine belt.

Look for stuck pulleys as well, that can make a belt break as the crankshaft forces the belt to try to turn the stuck pulley.

Good luck on this repair.

The engine is making a chirping noise and my husband thinks it might be something with alternator, could that be it?

Have your serpentine belt and tensioner checked the noise you are hearing is 95% of the time just a dry serp. belt. f you are very careful with the engine running you can us a thin wax cadle or belt dressing spray(available at a parts store) to coat the ribbed side of the belt to see if noise changes or goes away.

Noise from area of serpentine belt.

The best way I have found to locate a belt noise is to take a can of WD40 and spray it on the belt when the engine is running. (be careful of the fan) If the noise goes away, you know that it is a belt noise and not a bearing. When serpentine belts dry out they make funny noises. Hope this helps, cheers
