I will try the parts store tomorrow and see if they can give any help to loacte this part on the truck. I thought maybe it needs new spark plugs.

  • chuckster1_3 Jul 30, 2009

I have found that it requires vaccum to operate correct? as I see from a pic online that there is a hose connection.

  • chuckster1_3 Jul 30, 2009

If you want to try and explain a test method, I'm up for that.

  • chuckster1_3 Jul 30, 2009

One thing I don't realll get it why it starts right up cold?

  • chuckster1_3 Jul 30, 2009

I went and searched around the motor and found the fuel pressure regulator, all looks good around it. No signs of leaks and the vaccum line is connected and seems to be fine as well.

  • chuckster1_3 Jul 30, 2009

Does it run rough or anything once it starts up like it is flooded?

No, not at all. I was just out and while at the truck I tried starting it, and it will start right up over and over again. This is when it has set for about 5 to 6 hrs now. But once you have drove it, and then turn it off sometimes it will crank and crank like there is no gas and finally start up and run fine.

No lack of power or lack of acceleration. I will look into getting one and replacing it, and see if that cures the problem. I don't have a fuel gauge to test the pressure on the rail, wish I did.

It probably is a fuel pressure regulator. I don't have my books home for this vehicle so I am unsure as to where it is located on your vehicle but you might go to the parts store and ask them if they have one for your pickup and if they could show you where it is at. Most the parts stores will help you out. If not go to one that will. They are all pretty good about helping out.

Well it is possible but generally if it were plugs it would do it cold or warm and I have found that most of the time it is the fuel pressure regulator. I could tell you how to test it but I don't think you would understand as It is hard for me to explain it to you on here. The parts store might show you though if you go there.

Yes it does.....and there is fuel leaking out of one of the lines then it is probably shot.

Yes you got it............replace it and It will probably work fine. They around $30.00 for your pickup and easy to change.

Wow I still bet it is the pressure regulator......that is exactly how they act. You don't have any problems once it starts up like lack of acceleration when you romp on it? And I know this might sound stupid but you have changed your fuel filter right? The other thing is hooking a fuel gauge into your fuel rail to see if you have pressure there right when you start it up after it has been sitting but you have to have the stuff to do that for sure.

My 1998 gmc snonma votec wont start it cranks and cranks and after about 20 mins it starts after that i can shout it off and it will fire back up fine then a day will go by and it dose the same thing

You have to check the fuel pump pressure to make sure it is supplying sufficient fuel pressure..Try turning the switch to on but do not start..now listen for the fuel pump to prime the system..it should run for 4-5 seconds the shut off..now try and start..if it is fully primed it should start...note although you are getting some gas dosent mean the pump is ok...sometimes it starts to go bad and then all at once it will let you down for good...have it checked out..good luck

2004 gmc sonoma why does it take 2-3 times cranking before it starts and only does it sometimes?

install pressure gauge and watch when key is turned off to see if pressure drops to zero if so bad drain back valve in fuel pump replace it or deal with it or could be cheap aftermarket pump and has hard time building unnecessary pressure to open poppet valves between before fuel injectors

Check the magnetic clutch is engaged on front of a/c pump, have the motor running, a/c on and fan on high, if the centre hub is static the pump in not switched on, this can happen when the gas pressure gets low.
