It could be because your alternator isn't charging good enough or the connectors behind the alternator could be loose

It usually means you need an alternator. You need to test for 12 volts at the alternator first before comdeming it. If 12v does not exist you will have to figure out what main fuse is popped

The truck is a tow truck and is ran very frequently is there another solution to why it is draining the battery


With engine off and key out of ignition, take off negative battery cable and hook up a test light between battery post and cable end. If you have an unintended drain, the test light will be brightly lit. You may find the source of the problem by pulling fuses out one at a time till light goes off. Whatever fuse pulled caused the light to go off, that will be the problem circuit-some component on it may be draining your battery.
If the test light is dimly lit, that could be the computer memory, clock and radio memory. It should only be using milli-amps (like under 200 milli-amps) You might want to check if amperage draw is more than this.

My friend has a 2001 Volvo C70 that drains the battery constantly. She has replaced 2 batteries and is on her second alternator. It runs when boosted but turn it off and its dead. What can the problem...


The unfortunate thing is diagnostics DOES TAKE TIME. You need to set aside the time to be accurate.

Something for sure is draining the battery and methodical diagnosis is the only way to get it figured out. IF there were an open in the alternator to battery circuit, the new alternator would be damaged.

Pull the interior light and radio fuses, disconnect the negative battery and put a test light or volt meter in series with the cable and battery terminal. I expect the light will be lit or the voltage to be above .2 volts draw.... Disconnect the battery, remove one component, connect the battery test setup, and see if voltage drops or light goes out..... when it does, you have the offending system, so investigate that.

Be sure that you can garantee good ground between battery and everything....especially the engine.

START THE VEHICLE, PUT A VOLTMETER ON THE BATTERY. THE VOLTAGE SHOULD READ 13.90 TO 14.80. IF THAT IS OK, THERE MAY BE A BATTERY DRAIN. TURN OFF EVERY SWITCH IN THE CAR.CLOSE ALL THE DOORS. MAKE SURE ALL THE COURTESY LIGHTS ARE GOING OUT. & THE GLOVE COMPARTMENT LIGHT. RAISE THE HOOD. DISABLE ANY UNDER HOOD LIGHTS. DISCONNECT THE NEG. CABLE FROM THE BATTERY. PUT A 12 VOLT TEST LIGHT, ONE END ON THE NEG BATTERY POST & THE OTHER END ON A GOOD GROUND { METAL }. IF THE LIGHT COMES ON THERE IS A BATTERY DRAIN. NO LIGHT , NO DRAIN. IF IT'S ON, ONE AT A TIME PULL THE FUSES OUT OF THE POWER DISTRIBUTION BOX. IF THE LIGHT STAYS LIT, PUT THE FUSE BACK. DO THIS WITH ALL THE FUSES BIG & SMALL. IF THE LIGHT STAYS LIT, DISCONNECT THE ALTERNATOR. THEY CAN CHARGE THE BATTERY WHILE RUNNING, & DRAIN WHEN STOPPED.

get a12 volt test light remove negitive cable from battery attach clip on test light to negitive cable removed from battery. touch other end of test light to negitive side of battery if light is on something in car is pulling power if light is off everything is turned off you can test this if light is off by turning on the headlights the test light should stay lit until you turn off headlight switch. If light is on when fistr connecting to battery turn every thing off in car or disconnect anything includeing trunk or under hood lights one at a time until test light is no longer lit. if this is not the problem load test battery.

Yesterday when I went to work the battery and brake light were on when I got off the exit to get to work the battery and brake lights went off. Approxmitaly 12 hours later when I started the car to go home...


Try a day time running light modual,these things are notorious for messing up,and since they are supposed to work when the car is charging it seems like the logical solution.

On my 2004 Aviator, the indicator was lit all the time, and it did kill the battery if I didn't drive it every day. The dealer stated it should only remain lit for 20 minutes, and replaced the shift assembly. Sounds like they shortened the illumination time to 10 minutes.

The light you speak of is actually indicating an issue with the charging system and is usually an indicator of a faulty alternator.
However if your light flashes and doesn't remain lit it could be a sign of a bad connection in the charging system. If it only flashes once in a while you are better off to wait until it remains lit for a while. Simply because electrical diagnosis is very time consuming and the mechanic can spend hours looking and still not find a clear cause for your issue. And these wasted hours can cost you BIG.
But keep in mind that when that light is lit your battery is not receiving a charge and will go dead and could leave you stranded. So don't stray too far from home until you can get this issue resolved
