In most cases it is not the camshaft that causes engine tapping noise, but you should look to your valve lifters...one or more could be collapsed. My hat goes off to you and your husband though, for taking this on together! Here is a basic diagram that I hope helps you guys out: http://www.autozone.com/autozone/catalog/parts/jobDiagram.jsp?engineCyl=4&ymmeId=1995/42/33/10&imageURL=&categoryDisplayName=Internal+Engine&productType=00&parentId=56

I have a 1999 saturn. I need to. Replace the. Camshaft. Censor

It does not have a Cam sensor. I would check for vacuum leaks around the area where the intake manifold bolts to the head. Very common for them to leak.

What is the RPM at and how long does it stay there. How long has it been doing this? Is the check engine light on?

Does this car take a valve lash adjustment and what are the settings

Your car has hydraulic lifters. Hydraulic lifters just means that it uses engine oil to control the valve clearances using a bucket and shim arrangement.
Here's a generic image of what a hydraulic lifter can look like:25949035-hsh3lir2aljnaf1jzrgt1uh1-5-0.jpg

If the car makes a tapping sound at start up, this points to a problem in the camshaft area - including the hydraulic lifers/shims. Valve clearances are controlled by the lifters and shims. It could also be a worn camshaft - the lobes can become rounded.

Usually, there is no adjustment possible with most hydraulic lifters. Replacement (usually) means you have to remove the camshaft, though I am by no means certain about your particular model.

If you have the tools and ability, remove the rocker cover and have a look at things.

25949035-hsh3lir2aljnaf1jzrgt1uh1-5-1.jpg The image above shows a camshaft - the lobe is worn and rounded. When this happens valve clearance is excessive and may lead to a tapping noise. Engine efficiency is also affected.

The image below shows hydraulic lifters (example only..).
The lifter on the left has a 'dished' surface - wear caused by the camshaft or the lifter not being able to 'turn' in its bore.
25949035-hsh3lir2aljnaf1jzrgt1uh1-5-3.jpg The usual cause of this is (a) short trips where the engine hasn't had a chance to warm up properly and pump oil to the camshaft area (b) poor oil/infrequent oil changes (c) stuck lifter.

Before you spend money on parts or repairs, first try adding some oil flush to the engine to clear out carbon and 'sticky' deposits.

25949035-hsh3lir2aljnaf1jzrgt1uh1-5-10.jpg
... follow the instructions on the bottle...
Then change your engine oil and add something like a 'valve train additive' - this will try and quieten the tapping noise.
The (Ebay) link below will give you an idea of what additives are available (and so will your local car accessory shop).

Try the cheapest and easiest first. If that doesn't work .. unless you are confident that you can inspect, diagnose and replace parts .. give a mobile mechanic a call. Those guys are usually quite good.

My care makes a tapping sound after i get it to facctory running tempwhat can it be

I would try to pinpoint the noise using a mechanic stethoscope. Most of the time high tapping noises come from upper engine components. Valves, lifters, Camshaft etc.

Sounds like you might have starved the bearings of oil which in your words , you've got a knackered engine. Probably too late for a pump.

Knock when starting

Please identify the Make and Model of what you are driving. Some Ford V-8's from 2004-2008 had a major defect that I can give more info on. For other Vehicles, make sure the oil level is full.

When you hear a "Knock" and then a tapping, it can be a bad lifter or camshaft lobe. You may also have an oil pump that has gone bad and continues to damage the engine with less than ideal lubrication. Depending on the age of the motor, some older designs required the Valve train to be adjusted if they had adjustable "rocker arms".

Most likely you have more than 1 thing needing attention inside the engine. Besides the opinions here at Fixya, you may want to get several opinions from Mechanics who listen to your motor and give an estimate.

They would be telling the truth if they told you that you need to open the engine to get a complete price; because sometimes you can replace one part and other times many parts. It requires a Visual inspection and/or one done with measuring gauges.

About all you can do is shop for the best hourly rate $ and how many hours they need to repair it. There can be BIG differences in the cost of the parts too.

Hi, i have a toyota fielder 1.8cc with a some problem which has now come up. when i switch on esp in the morning after staying overnight, it produces some really annoying sound from the engine. when the...

If it is a 'squealing' noise it's probably the alternator/power steering drive belt. Before you turn on the engine in the morning, lightlt smear or spray some oil on the inside of the drive belt to lubricate it. If the squealing stops/disappears, then that's the fault ..

That squealing noise can be caused by an incorrectly tensioned belt, or a worn belt. Replacement is the only option.

The other frightening sounds can best be described as 'rattles' or 'tapping'. When a car stands overnight all the oil drains back into the sump (oil/pan).

There are two things (usually) that can be cause the rattle/tap:
1. Because the oil hasn't been pumped around the system, at start up worn big end bearings can rattle and tap on the crankshaft until the oil 'fills the gaps'. The tapping/rattling goes away as the engine warms and oil is pumped around the lubricating system.

A 'bottom end tapping' is a symptom of worn big ends (they are bearings at the bottom of the piston and fit around the crankshaft).

2. A rattle/tapping from the top of the engine can either be a worn camshaft or 'lazy tappets'. Again, when the engine warms and oil gets to the camshaft and tappets (also called 'hydraulic lifters) the noise will disappear.

If your car has this rattling/tapping noise - identify whether it is coming from just under the rocker box (ie the camshaft/tappets..) or the bottom end of the engine (big end bearings).

If the noise is coming from the top of the engine, try an oil change with a can of thick 'additive' included. A lazy tappet (lifter) isn't too much to worry about. A worn camshaft will affect the performance of the engine, though continue to do its job. An oil change with an additive included may help in quitening things down.

A bottom end tap/rattle (or 'knock') - the sooner that is sorted out the better.

the internal combustion of the main valve is most likely either clogged or it has a loose spark plug that is constantly providing a spark without oil. Either that or your break pads have gone bad or just some seats and stuff loose, I'd have it checked on by your nearest professional.
