Get an oil filter wrench with a thin band and raise the hood and loosen it from the top side, then crawl under the front of the car finish taking it off and remove it from the bottom. It doesn't seem to want to come out the top side.

SOURCE: installed new fuel pump because

Okay, you need to make sure the fuel pump is getting power and that you have the lines hooked up correctly. Also, when you replace fuel pumps you need to remove the air cleaner and use starter fluid to get the engine started.

How to diagnose fuel injection problems on dodge 5.9

HII,
  1. Relieve the pressure in the fuel line before disconnecting it. To do so, you have to disable the electric fuel pump before you start the engine. To disable the fuel pump, do the following:
    1. With the engine off, remove the fuel pump fuse from the fuse box. (Your owner's manual should show you where it is.)
    2. Make sure that the parking brake is on and that the vehicle is in Park or Neutral, and then start the engine. It won't run very long after you start it up, but the pressure in the fuel lines will be reduced.
    3. Turn off the engine. With the fuel pump disabled, you're ready to disconnect the fuel lines from the filter.
  2. Look at the old filter and the new one before disconnecting anything. You should see an arrow stamped on both filters that shows in which direction the fuel flows through it. If the new one doesn't have an arrow on it, look to see in what direction the old filter is installed so that you can tell which end of the new filter goes where.
  3. Remove whatever is holding the old filter in place and remove it.
  4. Put the new filter on in the same position as the old filter.
  5. Replace whatever holds the filter in place, and make sure it's secure.
  6. Replace the fuse for the fuel pump in the fuse box. Make sure that the parking brake is on and that the vehicle is in Park or Neutral, and then start the engine and check for leaks around the filter.

Where is the fuel filter located?

The fuel filter is located underneath the car... rear door passenger side. It is a round, metal cylinder with a stem on each side. If current filter is rusted on, or tight...use PB blast, or other lubricant to help free it up. It's just a matter of removing a hose from each stem, and replace with new filter, and use retaining clips provided with new filter. Basically put it back same way you removed old one. And have a bucket with you for run-off, or spilling.

Just make sure you replace exactly how it comes off, paying mind to direction of fuel flow.

Fuel pump location for 1996 Mustang 3.8L

On a 1996 Mustang with a 3.8 , the fuel filter is located just above the rearend assy on the body on the car. Obviously safety first, jack the vehicle and make sure its secure and blocked to prevent being crushed and make it unable to roll away. You'll need atleast a short flathead screwdriver to remove the old filter and if you can, use safety goggles to keep dirt and possibly fuel out of your eyes would be a plus. On both the inlet and outlet fuel lines on the filter there is a plastic clip that has to be removed first, becareful not to break them in some cases they may not be included with the new fuel filter. Once the clips are removed the lines should come off fairly easy with some slight prying or wiggling (DO NOT DAMAGE THE LINE CONNECTORS !!) Also, becareful of fuel spray because there is pressure in the lines, as some of us may already know there can be a little to ALOT of pressure and having fuel washed eyes is no fun, have a pan or something around to help catch the dripping fuel. After the lines are removed there is a large clamp wrapped around the filter loosen it up and slide the filter out of the retaining bracket, it will slide out only one way and you may have a fuel line in the way keeping you from removing to filter if that is the case, #1 you can either unbolt the bracket to help lower it enough to remove the filter or #2 simply pull down on the bracket to bend it slightly downward so that removal is easy. Remember which way the filter came out so that you don't put the new filter on backwards, fuel flow travels only one way if you put it on backwards the car will not run or if it does it won't run well at all. To reinstall just reverse the process. Good Luck.
