SOURCE: temp gauge shot up to max, grey smoke out of exhaust, never boiled up,car tried to run but lumpy, now no water in rad but oil is normal, filler bottle cap wont screw back on,, peugeot 405

sounds like blown head gasket (through exhaust port) fill with water and start up, look under car, and see if water is coming out of the exhaust pipe)note: if head gasket is blown thru exhaust port you won't have water in the oil. it will come out of the exhaust. if this is the case then possibly can fix with (k&w block sealer or comparable block sealer) since no water in oil engine should be fine.) but follow directions to a T on block sealer if you don't it could stop up the radiator and you'd be back in the same position. also make sure you fix problem that caused it, probably bad thermostat or water pump.

Thermostat in cooling System , first thing to check.

Overheating indicator flashes, but has oil, water.
Hi. The contacts in the Coolant bottle get contaminated and then don't pick up the water level. Brige the contacts at the water botlle and start the car, if the coolant/temp light behaves for 5 min or so after starting the car, then change the coolant bottle/resevoir.

If your radiator coolant is boiling then do not drive as your car could/will overheat and cause some serious damage

The temperature gauge in the Mk4 Golf is'nt that accurate, it will usually stay in the middle until you've got a major problem, where the coolant is boiling and expanding so if it's just slightly overheating, the gauge could show as normal.

The problem could be caused by numerous things such as a leak/crack in the coolant system and isn't pressurized such as a faulty coolant bottle cap not sealing properly, could be a problem with the fans, or and issue with the temp sensor /thermostat can cause confusion. It's hard to diagnose without seeing. I would take it into a garage for further inspection.

How to do driving the water temperature is high ?
1), should immediately stop the vehicle to a safe place.
2), off the air conditioning system, open the engine compartment lid, the engine idling. (note, in the process, do not attempt to open the coolant filler flap. The coolant boiling filler cap once opened, the cooling system liquid will spurt, resulting in personal injury. )
3), check the radiator fan is normal
4), the water table pointer after falling, the engine, check the level of cooling fluid to be cooled engine.
5), such as the water table pointer has not decreased, then immediately turn off the engine. The same store distribution.

2008 corsa utility overheating & water is boiling & pushing out through the water bottle
I see two possible causes.
1) Something is blocking air from cooling the radiator. Is there any debris like leaves blocking the radiator?
2) Something is preventing coolant from flowing through the engine. Could be a water pump failure.
Make sure your engine old level is within proper range.

Water is boiling but the temperature gage level is
Hi there..
You say the water is coming out of the header tank bottle and the geuge stays the same OK so tell me ...how far do you have to go before the water comes out of bottle.
2, Has the thernostat been removed or replaced latley.
3,HOW HOT DOES THE RADIATOR GET WHEN CHECKING TOP AND BOTTOM OF RADIATOR AS IF ONLY THE BOTTOM GETS HOT AND THE TOP STAYS COOL THEN ITS THE THERMOSTAT OR THE WATER PUMP or if both are good then it could be something like a gasket ..
So let me know the answers to all the above ASAP Ron

Engine overheats when heater pipes connected
I think you could be right about there being air trapped in the system.
Or the heater core(radiator) is plugged.
Either way you need a pressurized radiator coolant pump to put the coolant in without air being trapped.
Although,i have seen it done by jacking the vehicle up high enough that the radiator was now higher than the heater core level, and then the coolant was put in.
But this is dangerous to try.

Hello there,

Either an air bubble, the thermostat or the water pump.
  • Air bubble (pocket) - Just because the radiator is full, doesn't mean the engine is. When an air bubble circulates through an engine it will cause the temp gauge to swing from hot (when water is in contact with the sensor) to cold ( when air is in contact). The less water, the hotter the engine. Easiest fix - add water.
  • Thermostat - Keeps water circulating in the engine separate from the water in the radiator until it gets to a certain temperature. At that point, it opens and allows the hot engine water and the cooler radiator water to cycle. Hot to radiator, cool to engine. As the cooler water flows over the thermostat, it closes, allowing the cycle to repeat. If it opens at the wrong temp, or not at all, your engine will overheat. Water will begin to boil. Steam will make the temp gauge swing erratically.
  • Water pump - If the water pump is failing (sometimes the impeller will come of the shaft), the water will not circulate. Same results.
Troubleshoot:
  • First and foremost: BE SAFE!!! Wear safety glasses. Start this with the engine cool. When you look in the radiator, do it from an angle and as far away as possible.
  • Have a hose or a couple two liter bottles full of water.
  • Take off the radiator cap. (Do not take off if engine is hot)
  • Is the water level low? If so, top it off.
  • Make sure the transmission is in either PARK or Neutral and set the parking brake.
  • Start the engine.
  • Observe the water level in the radiator. If it drops, top it off again.
  • At first it should do nothing. The water in the engine is still cool. The thermostat is closed. As the water in the engine heats up, the thermostat will begin to open. When it does, you will notice the water level begin to surge up and down.
  • Check your temp gauge. If the gauge getting close to the 'Red Zone', the thermostat should have begun cycling before now. Go back to the radiator and check it.
  • When (if) the thermostat finally opens all the way, the water will start moving as it cycles through the system. You will be able to tell the difference.
  • If you see the water flowing, the water pump is ok.
  • If the water does not start to move and the gauge is getting close to 'Red', shut the engine down and let it cool. Do not put your face near the radiator. If the thermostat suddenly let go, The hot water, driven by steam, could erupt out of the filler hole. Replace thermostat. Rerun this test. If results are the same, replace water pump.
  • Does the water level drop at this point (air bubble)? If so, top it off while it's circulating. Adding cold water will close the thermostat. Be prepared to wait through the cycling two or three times.
  • Check the temp gauge again. Has it leveled off?
  • When you don't need to add water any more, put the cap back on. Observe the temp gauge for a few more minutes. has it stopped the erratic behavior? If so, it was an air bubble and it's gone. If not, replace the thermostat.
