Question about 1997 Jeep Wrangler

I can get it to start, it turns over, but won't start. I believe it's a timing issue. How can I tell if the timing sprockets and chain have jumped timing or the distributor?

Turn the engine by hand till it reaches tdc on the timing scale (if no scale, just make a fixed mark and use that as a reference). Remove the dist cap and watch the rotor and turn again by hand in the opposite direction 'till the rotor just begins to move. Measure the distance the crank turned to allow the rotor to move. (measure from the first mark to new position. If that distance is more than 1/2" likely you have too much stretch in the chain. Generally this will happen in engines with over 140k.
You didn't give a good description of your problem (symptom and what you checked and how) I'm assuming that you also mistated it because it cant start and not start at the same time??? In testing anything, you will need a decent manual (haynes and chilton are OK for this) and a decent digital volt ohmeter, I suggest you have a code check done if you can, and, begin by testing crank sensor, coil and if fuel is reaching the plugs. Don't eliminate the first basic tests of cap rotor , wires.

Rotate engine to top dead center (TDC) on the number 1 spark plug hole using timing mark on balancer...check number one hole to see if you are at TDC... You need a piece of stiff wire in the plug hole to feel the piston movement.

If it jumped a tooth, it is very loose. To see how loose, pull the
distributor cap...Rotate engine by hand until the rotor moves...Then reverse the rotation by hand and see how far you have to turn the crank before the rotor moves. More than a few degrees means wear (some of which is normal, it's going to wear) and more than 1/8th turn means beware, and 1/4 turn means start pulling it apart.

normaly you can just turn the distributor to adjust the timing using a timing light

I have a 1998 Baja 90cc atv when I try to start it the motor cranks but won't turn over I tryed spraying engine start into the air intake but all it does it back fire threw the exhast and carb


Backfire indicates a timing issue. The timing chain keeps the valves closed when ignition fires. When the chain gets loose, it can jump one or more teeth on the sprocket and cause this problem.

2 questions come to mind has the new sprocket got the same pitch ( distance between teeth ) as the crank shaft sprocket as this will make the chain jump out after a few degrees of movement. A quick check is to wrap the chain around the sprocket and see if there are links that do not sit fully around the teeth. There are different pitches for teeth and chains ( BA-- AM and metric)

If the engine makes rattling noise too then your timing chain tensioner may need to be checked. Slacked chain will alter camshaft timing. Check timing marks to confirm that the chain has not jumped one or two sprocket teeth.

It's one of two things. The plug wires are not on in the correct firing order or your timing chain has jumped a tooth on the crank or cam sprocket. You need to remove the distributor cap and make sure there is not a plug wire crossed somewhere by following the firing order in the direction of rotation on the distributor. If not hook a timing light up and see what the timing is running at. If the timing chain jumped a tooth you will need to replace the timing chain. Most of the old timing gear sets had a nylon cover over the teeth and it chips off and or the chain stretches and then the chain cam jump a tooth on the gear and throw the valve timing off enough to where you have the problem you describe. If you have very high mileage probably the timing chain. Also for $250.00 bucks I would start with the garage that did the tune up and tell them there is a problem. See what they say. Hopefully they are an honest garage. Good luck.

The engine will not start and backfires


  1. Have your timing chain, and timing sprockets checked. The timing chain probably snapped or jumped timing if you have broken teeth on the sprockets.
  2. If the timing checks out, have the cylinders compression tested and check for bent valves, etc.
  3. Check the firing order and spark plug orientation:

Timing Chain, Sprockets, Front Cover and Seal REMOVAL & INSTALLATION 2.5L and 4.0L Engines
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions in the beginning of this section.
  2. Remove or disconnect the following:
    • Negative battery cable
    • Accessory drive belt
    • Cooling fan and shroud
    • Crankshaft damper
    • Front crankshaft seal
    • Accessory brackets
    • Front cover
    • Oil slinger
  3. Rotate the crankshaft so that the timing marks are aligned. Fig. 1: Timing chain alignment marks — 2.5L and 4.0L engines 7924pg20.gif

  4. Remove the timing chain and sprockets. To install:
  5. For 2.5L engines, turn the timing chain tensioner lever to the unlock (down) position. Pull the tensioner block toward the tensioner lever to compress the spring. Hold the block and turn the tensioner lever to the lock (up) position. Fig. 2: Timing chain tensioner — 2.5L engines 7924pg19.gif

  6. Install the timing chain and sprockets with the timing marks aligned. Tighten the camshaft sprocket bolt to 80 ft. lbs. (108 Nm) for 2.5L engines or to 50 ft. lbs. (68 Nm) for 4.0L engines.
  7. For 2.5L engines, release the timing chain tensioner.
  8. Install or connect the following:
    • Oil slinger
    • New front crankshaft seal to the front cover
    • Front cover, using a new gasket

  9. Tighten the front cover bolts as follows:
    1. Step 1: Cover-to-block 1⁄4 inch bolts to 60 inch lbs. (7 Nm)
    2. Step 2: Cover-to-block 5⁄16 inch bolts to 16 ft. lbs. (22 Nm)
    3. Step 3: Oil pan-to-cover 1⁄4 inch bolts to 85 inch lbs. (9.5 Nm)
    4. Step 4: Oil pan-to-cover 5⁄16 inch bolts to 11 ft. lbs. (15 Nm)
  10. Install or connect the following:
    • Accessory brackets
    • Crankshaft damper. Tighten the bolt to 80 ft. lbs. (108 Nm).
    • Cooling fan and shroud
    • Accessory drive belt
    • Negative battery cable
  11. Start the engine and check for leaks.

Have a 94 cavalier 2.2 liter,timing chain


Install the cam sprocket, timing chain, and timing chain cover. Make sure the dot on the crankshaft gear is pointing towards the center of the Camshaft gear bolt. Make sure the hole in the Camshaft gear is pointing towards the center of the crankshaft. Be sure to remove the nail holding the chain tensoner back, before installing the timing cover The round hole in the cam gear is the alignment mark

Shut off won't start no compression


What did you check as far as timing chain etc goes? Did you confirm all sprockets are aligned properly & crank, cams etc turning as they should?

Timing chain Toyota pick up 22re 1991


The 22re timing chain is a double roller and last the lifetime of the car they are bullet proof however the chain tensional is another thing altogether.
