Question about 2001 Chrysler PT Cruiser

1 Answer

I just replaced a rear bearing on my 01 PT

I just replaced a rear bearing, and all rear brakes on my 01 PT Cruiser. I spun the rear wheel around to make sure it had no clearance issues, but I forgot I had the key in run, listening to the radio (car was not running). Now the ABS and trac lights are on. Can I clear this myself without a reader? Many said Autozone can clear it, but I read that some ABS codes will clear after a certain number of good starts? My OBD2 reader cannot access ABS codes, and the nearest Autozone is 65 miles away.

No, I was very careful of the speed sensor. The clearance between the tone ring and the sensor is within spec, and it is clean. I think that turning one wheel while the car was in run was triggering the ABS, and since the opposite wheel was stationary, I think this set the code. Especially since I went from where it was in "run" directly to "start". The module probably thinks a sensor is faulty, since they are active when the key is on.

Grinding noise from front wheel 02 pt cruiser

john, this could be the bearings in the hub end of the short shaft, the brake rotor, or the brake pad. I own a 2001 and have had this problem. It was the rotor, I don't know why they treat brakes like they do but I changed both rotors, and changed the struts while I was there. Hope this helps.

Right Rear Axle Bent. How much will parts cost

Your PT Cruiser does not have a rear axle per se. It has individual spindles on the left and right side which have a wheel bearing / hub assembly attached to them. The wheel bearing assembly is what your rim / tire bolts on to. Bending a spindle is very hard to do, unless you hit a curb or pothole VERY hard. It does happen, but unlikely. Wheel bearings / hubs do go bad which can cause the wheel to camber at an angle producing drag, alignment problems, brake problems and uneven / unusual tire wear. If it breaks completely, the wheel can even come off while driving.
I could not find a listing on the spindle, but a wheel bearing runs around $50-$70 per side. Replacing one can be done at home, but requires a very large socket (most are 31mm) and at least a 1/2" breaker bar or impact wrench to remove the spindle nut. Also 1/2" torque wrench to re-install.
Reply for direction on removal / installation if you intend to do the work yourself. A shop will charge you in the $200 range to do it including the part, only takes about an hour labor. If spindle is indeed bent, you will be looking at an added amount for the part, I would say one would cost in the $200 range, as they are a precision tempered steel part......Mike

My 2002 pt cruiser left front wheel shakes when hit brakes. i have brand new tires on it, they are balanced. could it be wheel bearings

usually it's a warped rotor. Take it to a brake shop to be resurfaced. Let me know if you have more questions.

Loud roaring from back - not all the time & not caused by stepping on brakes - ???

Possibly a wheel bearing could also be tires. Inspect them for proper wear. Sometims, if it is a wheel bearing the pitch or noise will change when the weight of the vehicle changes, for example going around corners. On your next test drive see if you can do some cornering once the noise starts and listen to it, if it changes good chance it's a wheel bearing.

Weird noise from my '01 PT cruiser.

It's possible that the you have "cupped" tread on a tire or two. After rotation you may hear it. Look at the outer edges of all of the tires for an uneven tread wear. Sometimes it takes a little driving to **** this down. If no luck here, I would stop back at the garage to have them verify there isn't a safety issue.

How do I replace the rear wheel bearings on a 2007 PT cruiser... is the task standard or is there some caution to take heed of?

there's always caution to take heed of when performing maintenance. first you need to check if the bearing the pressed on cold or warm. to pull them off you'll need a special tool. if you've never done it, have a dealer do it.
