Question about 2001 Dodge Durango

Open Question

1999 Dodge 5.2L Durango 4x4 has a miss driving at higher speeds

My Durango runs fine in idle and fairly smooth at lower speeds (20-40mph) but once reaching higher speeds it feels like it has a miss about every 30 seconds or so. Already know I have a Cat.Converter that is or is going bad (check engine light) but it has been like that for months - this problem started 2 weeks ago and is steadily getting worse. In an attempt to repair the problem I have replaced - fuel pump, spark plugs and wires, ignition coil and added a fuel injector cleaner - but the problem persists. Also, gas mileage has dropped off drastically. This is my only car and my wife is not able to make it to work as it gets drastically worse the longer you drive it. Could Cat. converter be doing this or is there something else? Had check engine light checked and only code is for Cat. converter. O2 sensors are brand new(6 mo. old). There were no other codes.

Dodge durango stalls after starting

There may be a fault code or codes stored, though. Have an engine scan done for trouble codes as a first step in diagnosis. If no codes are present, I would start by investigating the idle circuit-clean the throttle body and have the IAC (idle air control) tested for proper operation. Good luck.

The 5.9L engine runs but will not Idle.

could be the idle air control valve, vacuum leak or a bad throttle position sensor.

Oil light is on

May be bad oil pressure sending unit. Best way to check is to connect a mechanical oil pressure guage to engine and check pressures when engine is warm. Should be no lower than 40 psi at idle when warm, no higher than 70 psi at 2000 rpm.

What kind of tranny will work to replace mine?

Yes. They should both be 46RE transmissions and the bolt patterns and the plugs should be the same.

99 Dodge Durango Dies When Slowing

Here is the most common cause of surges and stalls and low idle rough idle, it is the idle speed control air-bypass valve and throttle valve (IAC for short), they get full of gunk over the miles and cause idle issues (stalls, low idle) like yours, Get a can of intake cleaner from any local parts store, not carb spray, intake cleaner, it is made by a company called CRC, remove the air intake hose to the engine, hold the idle high so the engine won't stall, then spray the can of cleaner into the intake while keeping the engine running, use at least 1/2 the can, shut down the engine and disconnect the battery for 5 minutes, then restart and complete a number of mixed driving cycles, town, freeway, stop and go etc., after a few days the problem will go away as the system will relearn to the clean intake.
