Question about 1989 GMC Sierra

1 Answer

1989 - GMC Sierra 3500 4x4 has 2 issues: 1) dash brake light flashes with engine on, but repair shop says all brakes are functioning properly and pads and rotors are OK & safe to drive, but they don't know why the dash brake light flashes. 2) Truck starts fine and runs fine. After driving for more than an hour and cutting off engine, engine will not start until it sits for about 10-15 minutes. Lights come on in dash, but no clicking, no sound, does not start. Also, notice after about an hour of driving that hood is so hot, you cannot touch it without a thick rag. The paint job is black on the hood, but you can put your hand on the door and it's hot in the summer sun, but not so hot like the hood that you can't touch it .The engine temp guage reads around 240 when the truck has been running a while but is not in the redline on the guage. Any helpful advice is appreciated. This is my pony & tractor haulin' truck and I want it to be right! Thanks!

For the "hot hood" issue above, I discovered that even though the temp guage was not reading that engine was overheating, it really was. Old farmer checked the oil dipstick and found it to be "blued", obviously too much heat under the hood. A few other things were "fried" under the hood as well. He told me to purchase the lowest temperature thermostat available for this truck. I bought a 170 degree thermostat and everything has been great ever since. The dask brake light also just quit flashing at the same time..

Put a remote starter cycloid on the firewall that's hooked to the one on the starter to get rid of the having for it to cool in order start it. At least that solved my problem. As for the brake light flashing..well mine does too but everything works....it's most likely a short somewhere. The biggest problem is driving off with the parking brake set. As for the hood. My paint is fried as well. I think it's because there is no insulation installed under the hood. Who knows. Good luck

I have a 1995 GMC Sierra an the third eye brake light comes on but the other brake light dont work

Could be both bulbs have burned out at once. Or could be the brake light switch. The third brake light and the normal brake lights operate seperatly. Or could be the wires.

1989 GMC SIERRA BRAKE LIGHT IN DASH STAYS ON [CHECKED FOR AIR IN BRAKE LINES-NO AIR] [BRAKE FLUID LEVEL GOOD] [BRAKE PEDAL PULLED UP] IN DASH BRAKE LIGHT STAYS ON

Check your emergency brake. Make sure it isn't partially pressed in. Try unplugging the switch to the emergency brake and see if the light goes out; if it does the switch is bad.

I have a 1989 gmc 1500 and cant get the brake lights to work i bought a new switch and they still dont work. also i got new bulbs my taillights work but the brake lights do not.

First I would check the fuses. You may have two fuse boxes. One inside and one under the hood. You can check for voltage on both sides of the brake switch to verify proper operation. That's where I would start.

Look up under dash where brake pedal pivots, you should see a switch that is activated by pedal arm.

2002 GMC Sierra 1500 rear brakes

Hi joelalthomas, if they replaced your brakes and you never even made it home they had better warranty the work and as for the "it was a common problem on 2002-2004 trucks" well check for Chevy recalls as this is a safety issue that would have been corrected at no expense to the vehicle owner, do a little more research my friend and let me know what happens, I will check around a little as well in the meantime I would find a new garage.Do not pay any more as you said your brakes worked fine until they worked on it good luck to you As for your 4x4 did you look at the left side when you did the right side? and were they bled off properly? you can visually check to see if the calipers are functioning
