If you have changed tire size or rearend ratio you need to call the ford dealership for the proper tach gears or sending unit.

Dash problem. You can change the speedo motor. Done to many. From then till today. Old ones are screw in, new ones are soldered.

Make sure you have the correct tire size on the car. Door jam sticker should show the correct tire size.

Igniton off speedo reads 0 turn the car on it moves to 20 mph. drives normal just speedo is off by 20 mph or so.?? everything else works fine on the dash cluster


if this is a newer car(within 10 years)you may have to have the bcm reset with a scan tool as some of these for some reason do this and its the only way to correct this.

Speedometer on 1999 maxima wrong, faster you go the farther off. approx. 20 mph faster at 60 mph. replaced vss.


do you have aftermarket wheel on the car?? bigger wheels can cause speed signal failure resulting in speedo acting up. different size tires will have different circumference causing speedo issues.

Its a loose connection on the speedo cable. its a b*tch to get to. I had the same problem on my truck, it would fluctuate in 5th gear on the highway. i spent the money and had a professional do it.

someone has modified. the speedometer cable has to be taken loose from the tranny and put back in. the only way it can be that wrong.

The speedo is electronic and has failed, you will need to have it repaired by an authorized GM repair shop that does GM electronics, this is not the dealer, they will send it out and charge 2X, send it out for repair yourself, bypass the dealer.

Speedometer Not Reliable


This happen to me too. Had to get it replaced under my exstended warrenty that cost me the $200 deductable but would of coast over $400 if this happened later.
