Question about 1988 Toyota Corolla 4 Door

Open Question

1988 Toyota Corolla will not start. My daughter was at the grocery store. She says the gas pedal became hard to push. She pulled into a parking spot and turned off the car. Now it turns over but will not fire. Gas tank is full, oil and fluid levels are fine. Belts are good. Any ideas?

    Thank you for responding.

It will only turn over, but it sounds different when it cranks than it has previously sounded. I got the car home and started trying to diagnose. I think I made a misrepresentation when I said the belts are good. All visible belts are in great shape. I think I have discovered that there is a timing belt that is enclosed behind the other belts. A mechanic told me that it is quite likely this belt broke, although the maintenance records tell me it was replaced only about 30,000 miles ago. (My daughter was given the car by her maternal grandmother. The car only has 84,000 miles now. And Grandma had the car serviced once a year so it is in pretty good shape. We joke that she replaced the tires every year because they had 5000 miles on them. She didn't really, but the car is nice.)

Anyway, the car never tries to fire, but it sounds very different. I thought if the timing belt is broken that may be the reason for no fire, no gas, no... Do you think that would be accurate? Also, if the belt breaks on this car, does it do any extensive damage?

I am going to try to get to that other belt tomorrow (Saturday) and see if it is broken. I am guessing that replacing that belt is pretty much an all day job for a rookie like me. Any thoughts are appreciated.

When pushing on the gas pedal from a stop gas pedal gets stuck for a moment

First check to see that a floor mat is not getting stuck at the pedal. If that's not it, i would get it to the Toyota dealer for repair as this could be a serious problem.

My back tail lights wont go off when i turn the car off

check the switch above the pedal brake, if you step on it there's a small metal coming out and if you release the pedal it will push the metal inside and that will turn the brake lights off, if the switch is broken you can easily replace it, just ask for your local auto store. hope i help you on this..

1988 toyota corolla sr-5

Locate the brake switch up above the brake pedal. Push in on plunger and check if brake lights go out. This switch can be unplugged and removed from its spot at the pedal. Then you can pull out plunger and reset it, put back in its spot, and let pedal readjust to the appropriate travel. It should automatically set to correct stroke length after pulling plunger outward to its furthest length. If this switch, or its adjustment is not to blame, post again. I will help more if needed.

Thanks, I hope this helps. TT

2003 S80 Unusal Braking Problem

I would check the vacuum line that goes to the brake booster behind the master cylinder. If there is a break in this rubber hose, then the brakes would take alot of effort to push and the engine could possibly increase in idle. Good luck and be safe
