SOURCE: timing belt or timing chain?

You 98 Corolla has a timing chain that it internal and need no normal maintenance. It uses a hydraulic/spring tensioner to keep things tight and as long as its quiet, everything is fine.
Your drive belt (not to be confused with a t. belt) is the external belt you see on the passenger side of the engine. It drives you alt, water pump, A/C and power steering. It uses a spring loaded tensioner to keep the belt tight. These can weaken over time and cause a rattle noise and belt slippage.

Start with it around the crankshaft, and then just go flat sides to flat sides, and ribs to ribs, and work your way around.

When is a normal time to adjust the timing chain and is it necessary if you have never had any problems

your book will say the service interval for the chain. It called a belt. Its usually done around 80,000. No adjustment can be made. It gets replaced. If you fail to replace it it can break and destroy the engine.

Timing belt for a 2005 Toyota Corolla type S

Well you are in luck if that is your concern. The '05 Toyota Corolla has a chain instead of a belt. The recommended mileage I am not sure of but it will be listed in the owners manual. Most of the timing belts are recommended at no later than 90, 000 miles. The timing chains I have done I did because of a chain guide issue. They do get some slack in them but they aren't going to cause you to be broken down on the road with engine problems like a belt can.
i hope this helps, please remeber to rate this fix.
