I had the same problem on my freelander and i changed the master and slave cylinder as this comes as one sealed unit pre filled with fluid, no need for bleeding and dont even need a spanner or any tools to replace it, i am 90% sure this could be ur problem.

Clutch plate is worn down to nothing and/or throwout bearing needs replaced.

Car has difficulty going in gear even if pedel is fully down


The clutch is not fully disengaging. Adjust the clutch cable to obtain a 1/2 inch of free play at the top of pedal stroke. If clutch adjustment is not correct, damage to synchronizers or clutch release bearing will occur. Your clutch should begin to engage about an inch off the floor when releasing the clutch pedal.

The clutch is not adjustable it is fully hydraulic. That means it is self adjusting, if the clutch pedal engages high on the pedal and the clutch is hard to push you need a new clutch plate and pressure plate.

On occasion now more often the clutch when I push it down it stops and gets hard not allowing me to change gears.


hydraulic operation , bleed the system , check reservoir level, replace master cylinder
for cable clutch operation , replace the cable
the problem is that the clutch pressure plate is not fully disengaging when the clutch pedal is depressed and the problem is not in the clutch but the pedal operation

With the engine off, i can push the clutch in, and shift through all the gears ... to move - the clutch isn't disengaged even with the pedal fully depressed. .... If the clutch is correctly adjusted, it will start to engage when releasing the clutch pedal at 1 in. off of the floor. When in Heavy traffic shift trans to neutral while at a stop, take your foot off of the clutch pedal to avoid overheating the release bearing

Clutch not engaging


Well, it would shift easily with engine off, because the transmission input shaft is not turning. Engine running and clutch engaging good, the input shaft would again be stationary and allow smooth shifting.
What you have to determine is if the clutch disc or pressure plate is bad (a new clutch is needed), or if the pedal hydraulic system has a malfunction. When you push the pedal down, a rod from the top of pedal pushes into the clutch master cylinder bolted to the firewall under the hood. This cylinder has a reservoir filled with brake fluid. When the rod forces fluid from the clutch master down a steel line and into the clutch slave cylinder down on the transmission bell housing, the hydraulic pressure forces a plunger from the slave cylinder to extend and push the clutch fork lever a small amount, enough to force the clutch release bearing (aka throw-out bearing) against the pressure plate. This relieves pressure on the clutch disc and input shaft becomes stationary for easy shifting.

My clutch will not engage when I push it in. It will Barely allow me to put the stick into gear and it is very difficult to get out of gear as well. It feels as though the pedal is giving no resistance...


sounds like clutch needs replaced has it been over 50,000 miles. if fluid needs added its not a good sign may be a leak. with an hydraulic clutch there is a small reservoir near brake reservoir under hood on the firewall for clutch fluid.

Well, it sounds like the clutch cylinder / clutch linkage is not properly adjusted or the clutch cylinder is not fully bled, or it is malfunctioning -- it's not fully depressing the pressure plate when the pedal is pushed down, therefore, the clutch is still engaged.

The clutch is not fully releasing. You can try putting it into some other gear first, then rapidly moving to first gear, but really, you need to either adjust the clutch, or get it repaired.

My truck is a manual and it wont go into gear after cranking it up. The petal is soft and easy to push to the floor. We have put a clutch cylinder and a slave cylinder and have bleed them. and it still...


It could be a bad clutch cylinder or a bad slave cylinder. If it is either - the clutch would not fully disengage. This would make changing gears very difficult. If it is the slave cylinder the system should loose fluid and start to drip if you pump it repeatedly. If it is the clucth cylinder it should just seep past the plunger seals and the fluid may not lower. If you put the truck in gear without starting it and push the clutch in - can you push the vehicle? If the answer is no - the clutch is not fully disengaged.
