I think the ignition system was computer controlled around that year. trace the cables from the spark plugs back, there may be no distributor.

First make absolutely sure #1 cylinder is at top dead and the timing mark on the crank pulley is lined up. Pop off the distributor cap and check to see if the rotor is pointing to the #1 spark plug wire. Loosen the bolt that holds the clamp at the base of the distributor. Move it aside or remove it them pull up on the distributor and move it out.

Check your belts to be free of debris.
If they are remember that the compressor can go bad also.
Replace it as necessary.Maybe the sound comes from somewhere else .

I cant remember where my leeds go on my distributor cap
how many cylinders? for 4 the firing order is 1342 for example--if you have 6 or 8 lookit up on the net and you will find the firing order and then just count round the distibutor and hook up accordingly--modern cars don't have this issue--no distributor.

Firing order for a 1996 EF ford falcon
EF & EL are 1,5,3,6,2,4
EF has a coil pack under the inlet manifold the EL has a distributor
EF uses a waste spark system so 2 plugs are fired at the same time eg 1 & 6 - 2 & 5 - 3 & 4
