hey, im a usa sailor and i have also encountered this problem. how i fixed it.....,
you may be missing a little rod that attatches the handle from the cab to the crankcase. if you have that rod then see if the holes in the levers under the truck have little rubber grommets. these are what holds the rods in place.
if missing :
the rod......contact your nearest auto parts store preferably napa or autozone usually runs about thirty bucks at most
the rubber grommets.......usually any hardware store will have these for only four bucks

Hi. In this situation, the first thing to do is check the transmission fluid level. If its not sealed, you can find the dip stick under the hood.Once you have checked the fluid level and it is at a proper level, i would move on to the filter. If the filter is faulty or clogged, this will cause hard shifts because it will interrupt the normal fluid flow. Next, i would run some tests on the TCM(transmission control module). this device sends the shift signals to the shift solenoids inside the transmission pan. This device may be malfunctioning or faulty in its design. The last check would be the actual shift solenoids. If the solenoids are not working properly and, the TCM cant communicate with them in a correct manner, it will cause what you are experiencing. When testing the shift solenoids, you Will have accses to the inside of the pan. If you notice some little metal fragments on the bottom of the pan and, the fluid is dark and not purple, this can be signs of major gear separation and, you will have to rebuild the transmission at this point.
Please rate and god bless.

I had a 1987 Century and when mine started acting like that I took it to a garage and they hooked it up to a computer tester for free. Is she getting the check engine light coming on? They found that mine was running (lean) which ended up being my fuel pump. Which is in the gas tank and can be pricey to get done, between $250-$350 and of course the filter would get done at the same time and that is only$20

This is a fuel system and electrical issue.
Replace fuel pump (located in the fuel tank beneath the back seat) and fuel filter (located in the hood) then check the alternator.
That is all.
