My civic will start 90% of the time.It has an auto trans and when it does not start the fear shift button locks up. can you give me an idea of what it may be? When it won't start I can sometimes hear a "click" sound and then the car will start. I am baffled.

It may be the ignition switch going out. The click is the shift lock solenoid disengaging when brake peddle is depressed.

Shift lock

It could possibly be a bad electrical connection or poor connection with the transmission. Did the mechanic get any error codes?

I have a 1999 civic ex auto. when i first start the car and drive it run fine for about 5 mins then the car slows down and wont accelerate at all. from a dead stop it take about 10 sec to get up to 20 mph....

try moving the shifter to first and then second gear, until you get to drive. if one fails to switch then it can be a transmision problem. when that happens also try shutting of the car and restarting it and see if it continues to do the same thing. this might be because the trans is warm and does not shift properly, also the result being you need a knew trasnmision.

Shift lever is loose and will not go into gear

If it is an Automatic, there is only one cable that goes to the transmission. If it is a manual, there should be two. You will have to disconnect the cable from under the hood, and see if the levers are loose there. If they are, it might be as simple as tightening them back down. If not, the trans may need a rebuild.
