Question about 1988 Dodge D-Series Pickups

I have a 2006 Dodge 1500, it use to stay at 500 RPM when idling. Now it reves itself when idling and bounces back and forth between 500 & 1000 RPM. What is the cause of this?

no supposed to idle higher than that , usually even less .

I would check the idle air control valve that is the what controls rpms

Engine misses at idle. changed distributer, rotor and cap, fuel filter, plugs and wires. tried to adjust idle screw not much improvement. when you crank it it will start at 1000 rpm then falls to 500 then...


had a few issues with the temperature sensor that caused this type of problem,also check the temperature driving.
Does it heat up to mid gauge or does it stay low or drop when driving.Thermostats sticking open also cause idle issues in Honda range.
Remove the spark plugs and let me know what color the tips are;sooted up or clean.
Is this the EFI injected model or one of the carby models as the above suggestions affect the EFI,but temperature is important to all?

4.7l v8 reving from 500 rpm to 1500 rpm in neutral or park. What could be causing this. Had mechanic clean out air intake box, but did not fix


check idle air control motor for carbon. it may be clogging system. if it sticks it will not let vehicle idle right.

I was towing and the hud said hot transmission fluid bring engine to idle. I pulled over and let the tranny cool but since then the trucks shift pattern has changed. First revs to 5000 rpm before changing...


your transmission oil is likely burnt,there by losing it's viscosity. check for brown rather than red fluid on dipstick.have transmission oil & filter changed.it is possible overheating will have caused additional damage.

What should the rpm be when idling?


depending on the motor, all makes and models should ranged no less then 500 rpm and 1500 rpm, the most common idle is about 1000 rpm and 1200rpm.
