This causes the automatic transmission shift lock control and park lock solenoids to release. This allows the shift lever to move from the PARK position.
Do the brake lights work ? If not could be cause by bad brake light switch .

20% of the time I cant get key to lock into the lock position, dash lights go out,BUT ignition circuit is left on,its like trying to remove key,w car Not in park.Could it be the neutral safety switch?


No , it's not the park neutral switch , The park neutarl switch won't allow the vehicle to start if not in park or neutal , has nothing to do with turning off the vehicle . Problem with the shift lock contro system probably !

The park lock control system is a safety device that prevents an inadvertent shift out of PARK when the ignition is OFF. The system consists of the following components:
• The automatic transmission park lock solenoid
• The brake to shift relay
• The body control module (BCM)
• The powertrain control module (PCM)
With the ignition in the OFF position the park lock control solenoid is de-energized. This mechanically locks the shift lever in the PARK position. With the ignition in the ON position, battery voltage is supply to the park lock control solenoid. The control circuit of the park lock solenoid is provided a ground through the brake to shift relay when energized. The body control module (BCM) supplies a ground for the brake to shift relay when the body control module (BCM) receives a class 2 message from the powertrain control module (PCM) indicating the transmission is in the PARK position. This closes the normally open contacts of the brake to shift relay and grounds the park lock control solenoid. This energizes the park lock control solenoid releasing the mechanical park lock.

There is no module on the brake pedal . There is a brake switch , do the brake lights work ? If the brake lights work switch is ok .

Important: Depress the button on the side of the shift lock actuator. With the button is depressed, cycle the plastic straw within the shift lever 3 to 5 times. The straw should move smoothly and freely except near the top of the travel where additional force will be required to mechanically actuate the park lock mechanism inside of the shift lock actuator. If there is stick/slip or abnormal friction while cycling the plastic straw or if the straw is altogether stuck in the lever, the entire control assembly (shifter and shift lock actuator) needs to be replaced. Why wont my car shifter shift out of park?


Does the engine start ? Is this a automatic transmission vehicle ? Do the brake lights work when you press on the brake pedal ? It probably has something to do with the Automatic Transmission Shift Lock
The brake transaxle shift interlock (BTSI) system consists of the body control module (BCM), powertrain control module (PCM), BTSI solenoid, stop lamp switch, and PRNDL selector switch. The BTSI system prevents the driver from moving the shift lever out of PARK unless the brake pedal is depressed while in RUN or CRANK.
The BCM controls the output to the BTSI solenoid by grounding the solenoid which energizes it, preventing shifting out of PARK. When the BCM receives input from the PCM over the Class II link that the transaxle is in PARK and the brake pedal is depressed, it will stop grounding the BTSI solenoid or de-energize it which will allow shifting. After the transaxle is moved out of the PARK position, the BCM shall monitor the status of the PRNDL serial data message sent by the PCM and shall continue to de-energize the solenoid until the transaxle has been returned to the PARK position.
In the event that the serial data messages are never received (approximately 5 seconds) by the BCM from the PCM, the BCM shall de-energize the solenoid to allow shifting. The transaxle can be shifted from PARK by placing the ignition switch in the ACC position. This eliminates power to the solenoid.

I believe this vehicle is equipped with a shift lock that necessitates depressing the brake pedal before it can be shifted out of "Park". This is a safety feature designed into almost every car made nowadays to prevent unintended movement of the vehicle when shifting out of "Park". The Shift Lock solenoid is triggered by the brake light switch located near the top of the brake pedal arm. Starting with the "basics", check to see if the brake lights are working (they should illuminate when the brake pedal is pressed. If the brakes lights do not come on. then proceed to check the brake/stop light fuse. Replace if needed. Once the brake lights are functioning, the shift lock should "disengage" and allow you to shift out of "Park" when the brake pedal is pressed. If the fuses are okay, but still no brake lights, then the Brake Light Switch may need to be replaced.

Brake lights working but won't shift out of "Park"? Check for a separate fuse for the Shift Lock Solenoid. Replace if needed. Otherwise the Shift Lock Solenoid may need to be replaced. This will require disassembly of the console to access the part.
