Loud noise coming from Driver front side

I was going down the interstate today and started smelling rubber burning, thought it wasnt me til I started to get off on my exit and then my 97 Cavaliar 2.2L starting making a really loud squilling noise coming from the driver side front. I pulled off onto the shoulder, turned off the car, looked under the car to see if anything was dragging, nothing was. I started the car back up, it cranked fine, it is a manual, and it shifts fine. It made that sound all the way to my destination about 2 miles from the interstate. It feels like something to do with my brakes being it grinds a lot and I could barely stop. What could this be? I havent changed the brakes since I got the car over a year and a half ago, but it wasnt driven for 7 months but to crank and drive around the yard to not mess it up from sitting too long. If anyone can help!! I would really appreciate it!!!!! Thanks!!

I have never had a front end alignment. I havent had the car but a year and a half and the alignment hasnt acted up. It drives fine. Just always something going wrong with this car. I am beginning to see why no one in my family has ever owned one! The brakes just started acting up yesterday. I figured I could change them this weekend. I didnt think anything of it. This is the first car I have ever owned that has done this. I will check out the wheel bearings tonight. Thanks for all the help. If anyone else can think of anything for me to check, please let me know, I am all ears! And thanks to other person that suggested check the pulley. But only pulley that I know of is on the passenger side. But I will check it out 2nite also!

Well, it turns out that my spring fell on the driver side! Never heard of that happening, but it is being fixed. The brakes will be getting done this weekend, but in the meantime, lol, at least I dont have a major repair to do!!!!!!

I would strongly suggest having your wheel bearings checked out on both front hubs. If you smelled rubber burning...this points to a possible severe front end problem and should be checked out ASAP! How long since it has had a frontend alignment? Also sounds like your brake pads are metal to metal, which would mean having new pads and rotors installed.

Inside of right rear tire is covered in axle fluid. Is car safe to drive til next paycheck? This morning I started noticing a burning rubber smell. Not making any noise though.

you can drive it but be aware that the oil is on the brake pads/shoes on that side which creates poor braking. the smell is the gear oil getting hot and burning off. depends when your next paycheck is. would not let it go beyond a week or two.

I need to know all the kinds of belts that are in a 2003 ford escape and where they are located

Depends on the engine that is in that car but there are usually at least 2. One is very long and it called the serpentine belt. The other usually runs power steering or air conditioning.

Burn smell near tires and strange sound too

it will be one of two things...............either your brakes are sticking on slightly (frozen caliper) and its heating up because of the drag.................or the wheel bearings are shot and heating up when you drive it.................. that's all it can possibly be.
If you aren't good with the tools then its off to the garage for this issue.

2002 T&C 3.8, 4 speed auto heavy clutch or brake smell

1st thing to check is when you put in gear when cold and again when hot Take off fast ,,the noise if there igoes up and down with the speed and rpm ,,the noise you can hear mostly is the pump in side the gear box is not pushing enough pressure to the Forward Band clutch which drives the car so it has to slip and that is what you can smell the clutch bands burning And the more you can smell it the worse its getting and soon will let you down in a place you dont want to be..
So get it checked out new or as soon as poss
The A/Con clutch also sounds like its worn out.

Have a 2003 Cadillac CTS that I first smelled a rubber burning smell come out of a/c vent while sitting at the light only. Then today went to go home and heard all familiar noises when you start a car but...

Hello, I dont know if I can help you or not but this is what was going on with my car: It had the same smell coming out after the car was warm enough. It smelled like rubber burning. I took it to the GM Goodwrench and they thought it was just a loose nut that caused an oil leak. So they fixed that but it still had that smell. We discovered it was our power steering fluid leaking onto the engine. Now maybe your smell is from leaking transmittion fluid and the car's security systems are a pain in the ****. They will lock the car from starting if it thinks you hurt the car. I dont know if this helped but I hope it did.
