Engine malfunction light on 99 Acura RL

I was low on gas in my 99 Acura RL and as I was driving to the gas station, the car started dragging then accelerating as if on its own. The gas light came on at the same time that the engine malfunction indicator lamp came on. I checked the gas cap and have started the car at least three times (per the manual) since then. It starts fine, but the lamp is still on. Any suggestions on what else could be going on?
