the relay is only a current buffering device, ( a poor mans transistor i call it)
if the pump or it's wires are shorted, the relay can melt.
the
first test is pump voltage
if the volts is like 6v (low) cranking we pump check current.
5 amps is typical for these small cars.
15 amps is bad.
if confused get a automotive electrics/electronics tech to fix it.
He has a nice meter to find this fast.

the best tool is the AMP CLAMP (DC amperes)
i put it on the line and check pump current.
the pump is fuel cooled and fuel lubricated,never run the tank dry.
nor run the car (pump) with filter clogged, it overloads the pump.
