Use feeler gauges to set points set them at .017 then timing should be 10-12 degrees

dwell angle is the no of degrees rotation between points closed and points open and for example on a 4 cylinder engine ( 4 lobes =90 degrees the dwell would be around 45 degrees available
there is an adverse relationship between point gap and dwell angle
the closer the points the bigger the dwell and conversely the bigger the gap the smaller the dwell angle
in a distributor the point gap of 18 would have a large dwell angle and that affects ignition timing
in your workshop manual there will be a dwell angle specification and if you set the points at .020 " that will put you close to the dwell angle specification
from there you adjust the gap to obtain the dwell setting
after yo have the dwell set , adjust the ignition timing

Set timing 383 dodge 1969 superbee


Set timing at 650 RPM in Nuetral, if it is a manual transmission set to 0/TDC, if automatic set to 5 degrees BTDC, ignition points should be set at .017" with a quality feeler gauge and final dwell is 33 degrees, remember correct point gap is essential to get the timing correct. If you experience "PING" ****** timing 2 degrees.

What is the timing specs for a 1968 ford thunderbird


The timing specifications for that vehicle with all V-8 engines 302, 390, 428, 429 are the same.

Spark Plug Type: BF32

Spark Plug Gap: .034 In. - .035 In.

Ignition Point Dwell Angle: 27 Degrees

Ignition Point Gap: .021 In.

Ignition Timing: 6 Degrees Before Top Dead Center

Engine Compression: 150 Psi.

Engine Idle Speed:

302-390-428 Engines: 625 Rpm M/T or 550 Rpm A/T

390 GT Engine: 700 Rpm M/T or 550 Rpm A/T

429 Engine: 550 Rpm M/T or A/T

I need the timming specs in my 1966 buick riviera its got a 425 nailhead single 4.


The spark plug type is 44S and the gap is .032. The ignition points should be set at a 30 degree dwell angle or a .016 point gap. The ignition timing should be set at 2-1/2 to 3 degrees before top dead center, and the engine compression should be 170 psi. A "straight 6" is NOT a "V6"...whatcha really got?
There couldn't be a more simple car in the world to work on...If you have experience with carbs got ahead and check her out...unfortunately, if you DON'T...just take it to an OLD mechanic, not some kid, and have em look at it...Couldn't be more than $25 and WATCH HIM as he''s doing it.
My hunch is it's the choke assmbly.

RPM at idle, and T.D.C degree


5.0 L with CFI = 550 rpm

5.0 L with CFI = 10 degrees @ 550 rpm

5.0 L with a 4bbl carb = 700 rpm

5.0 L with a 4bbl carb Calif. = 10 degrees btdc @ 800 rpm

5.0 L with a 4bbl carb Fed. = 12 degrees btdc @ 800 rpm

Setting the timing on a Chevrolet Pickup

The timing should be set at 6 BTDC. Be sure to set the dwell first, then the timing. Hope this helps.
