If you have the correct tools not too can borrow tools from advance auto parts with a deposit. You need to replace both front sides at the same time struts and shocks should ALWAYS be replaced in pairs.Having an extra set of hands does come in handy as well have a friend help you and when done throw some burgers on the grill.

Replace struts

Unless you are familiar with mcpherson struts, it would be wise to have a shop replace them for you. You would have to bring the vehicle to a shop after replacing the struts anyway because the wheel alignment would have to be checked. If you don't check it, you will kick yourself when your front tires wear faster, your steering wheel isn't straight, or the car pulls to one side. Besides those reasons, if you remove the center shaft nut without the proper spring compressing tools mounted, the spring will shoot out of control, possibly causing major damage and physical injury.

My 2005 buick rendezvous is eating up my front tires from the inside out. what could i do to fix it?

Sounds like you have bad front wheel hub assemblies... google it, GM won't admit there is a HUGE problem with them, but there is. Just got back from a trip, had to replace the driver side front tire, wore to the steel belt. Went in for an alignment after new struts and whala, once again I have a bad assembly on the drivers side. This is the THIRD time I have replaced it in less than 2 years. Don't pay the dealer to do it. Get the part at the auto parts store and do it yourself. You'll save big bucks and it will wear out before the lifetime warranty so your next one will be free (if you install it yourself).

I had a wreck when the other driver hit me head on mostly on the front drivers side of my 2005 Nissan Altima, what should I be checking internallly or under the hood? Front axle, struts, shocks, brakes,...

What I would suggest is taking it to a dealership and have perform an inspection on the car. Let them know you were in a wreck, so they would be able to look for any frame damage, leaks, or any other damage to the car. What I would suggest is communicate with your insurance company, because one Strut alone (If you needed it) would run at least $200 in labor (If their labor rate is around $100 an hour or so).

Struts have big springs around them and they need to be compressed to change the strut. These compressed spring store a large amount of energy and can be very dangerous when handled improperly. This requires special tools and skills. Also after changing struts a wheel alignment is necessary. Unless you are a very experienced do it yourselfer changing struts is probably not something you should try. Take it to a shop.

2002 ford focus se. need to change the front struts (at least the passenger side).

I highly urge you to take the car to a repair facility. Replacing struts is very dangerous especially when removing the coil spring from the strut. Without the proper tools you or someone close can be seriously hurt. If you must replace them yourself than go with what is known as a ready strut. It is a complete assembly. New strut, spring, strur bearing, and strut boot preassembled. They are more money but worth it to avoid getting hurt.

Diagram of how to change 2003 front struts

You will need a strut compressor to do change them out. I would strongly recommend not taking them apart yourself. You can take them off the car, and have a shop swap the springs over, but you could send the strut through the car/ceiling/or worse your head if you attempt it yourself. If you still need to know how to remove the strut, sign up for an account on You have to use internet explorer, go to "shop", then choose the car and you're set. And best of all, its FREE.
