Question about 1996 Jeep Grand Cherokee
I purchased my jeep used, and have the same gauge problem. i can START the jeep, but sometimes gauges will not work until i do a fonz tap on the dash. HA HA and they start working. I'm guessing a loose gauge panel connection, but i have not tried to find it yet. Yours maybe the ON connection in the ignition switch or wiring, since it won't start also. When the ignition(key) is released from the START position it returns to the ON position to stay running.

Check that the smaller wire going to battery positive terminal has a good connection. Check for blown fusible links under the hood and fuses in fuse panel.

SOURCE: wont stay running
This sounds like it is your ignition module not sending message o your computer letting know that the key is in the ignition and the car has been started. Replace the ignition module
