Ford Contour My daughter was in her 1999 Ford Contour with the vehicle in park the RPM's spiked as well as the speedometer. It only lasted a few seconds, after this happened she indicated that there was a buzzing noise coming through her radio (she changed stations to make sure that it was not just that one station). She proceeded to her destination and returned home, upon returning home she said that the RPM's and speedometer spiked again. She turned the vehicle off, but when she went to start the vehicle it would not turn over. I came home and tried to start her vehicle, the starter clicked but the car would not fire. I attached the battery to a charger and charged the battery and started the car. Can you tell me if the problem is with the computer, the battery, the alternator or the starter?
Sounds like a battery issue possibly alternator problem take the car to auto parts store and have them check both the battery and alternator if this helps would appreciate a vote

Have your alternator checked. If one (or more) of the diodes in the alternator is shorted, you can get similar symptoms, and it won't charge the battery either.
Check your Control arm bushings and or your ball joints. The bushings are known to wear out easily and the replacement control arm with ball joint included is only around $150.00. You can check the control arm by putting vehicle on jack stands and with a pry bar pry between the frame and control arm. If there is excessive movement then replacement is required, also when the car is in this position try to pivot your wheel top and bottom(in and out) and this checks the ball joint.
Start with changing the alternator. If it continues after that try to find a used computer from a wrecking yard. The ECM/computer is very expensive at the dealership and your local autopart store can't order them.
it is the vss (vehicle speed sensor). i had the same problem, cost £35 for sensor and clip. its behind the gearbox. very awkward job but can be done yourself. the hardest part is getting the pin out, you need a very good pair of molegrips and a lot of patience.
