it is an automatic, i've tried turning the wheel and nothing...how do i test the Park Lockout theory?

  • chris cogburn May 11, 2010

Two possibilities: the steering wheel lockout, and the transmission lockout. Automatic transmission? The Park lockout is likely stuck. If it's the steering wheel lockout, you have to turn the steering wheel a little until it lets go. Could take some force, but don't worry, you can't break the steering column by turning the wheel.

Unfortunatley there is no fix for this just a replacement of the tumbler either take it to a lock smith or you can remove it and take a new one to the locksmith to re-key it to your old key to remove it you have to take off the plastick cover on the bottom turn the key to the acc position on the bottom of the tumbler case there is a small hole just big enough to fit a scratch all point push in the button and pull on the key the tumbler shuld slide out.

Spray the lock cylinder with WD40, work the key in and out several times, then before you try to turn it put the key in the cylinder and rap the head of the key with the handle of a screwdriver a few times, then try to turn your key.

Usually a sign the tumblers in the lock cylinder have worn out or jammed.
You may have to get the lock cylinder drilled out and replaced.

Stuck eldorado key in DTS ignition now car won't start

Make sure your steering wheel isn't locked. Sometimes a key won't turn until you jiggle the wheel while trying to turn the key.

I put key in ignition and it won't turn. Steering wheel will turn but key won't turn. We have 2 keys and neither will work. What can I do?

If the wrong key was inserted it may have bent a tumbler pin, maybe try some wd-40 or similar and work it with the right key, might drop the tumbler back,,if not the whole ign. cylinder will have to be changed

When I put the key in and hold the steering wheel it won't unlock and my key won't turn

the steering wheel has a locking devise released by the key when starting, at times the wheel is turned in a way that keeps pressure on the lock that makes turning the key harder, this is the same in most cars, so a little jiggle of the wheel will make turning the key much easier, please take a moment to rate my reply Good Luck
