SOURCE: Evaporation Emissions
On most newer car the reason the evap system light come on is because the gas cap was not closed tightly. Also do not top off when fueling because this will ruin the evap system. What the eveporative sytem does is to make sure gasoline fumes don't go into the atmosphere. It basically sucks the fume from the gastank into the engine along with the regular combustion. First make sure the gas cap is good. If it is old replace it with a new one. Close it tightly. You may have to disconnect the battery to reset the code. If the code never came back again then it is fixed.
