Usually a flashing O/D light means the vehicle speed sensor is not working (VSS).
Go to Auotzone and ask for a free computer scan to see if there is a defect fault code stored in the engine computer for the VSS.

When slowing down I can feel the car downshift at 35 mph


These cars shift down @ 35 mph from overdrive to 3rd speed.

That light is to let you know the overdrive cancel button is on. Does the dransmission downshift out of overdrive when you push the button? If so i would suspect a bad buld or a broken wire in the shifter assembly. If it does not downshift then good chance the button is bad, dont know if you can still buy this new.

Start with simply changing filter and fluid for transmission. If that doesn,t work go to your local parts place and scan the codes on your vehicle. I have the same problem and that is what I am doing.

sorry cant answer this one ,no automatics here in spain ,but i would have a look at the solonoid thats on the gearbox thats operating the overdrive .Or trade it in for a nice VW or peugeot combi with 1.9 lt diesel and mega miles to the gallon ,a 5lt petrol gas guzler is not politicaly correct with our troops being blown up by rag heads now is it.

2001 chysler T&C downshifting


It must be seeing a fault coming out of 4th gear. The downshift is "Limp In" mode. That is about when the Clutch Volumn is recalculated. It may be having OverDrive issues (which is internal) You need to have a diagnostic done with a scanner. Find out which fault is occuring and then go from there. There may even be updates for the TCM. Let me know how that goes?
