Faulty Air Compressor

What are the consequences of not replacing the air compressor in my 1997 Nissan Altima? My AC works just fine but every now and then I hear a skreetching noise when I hit the gas but ONLY when the AC is on. I'm debating if I can hold off until next summer to fix but want to be clear on what affects this could have on other parts if I don't address it immediately. I'm almost at 200K miles and was told it's not worth fixing.

I had two people look at it while the AC was off and on. They both felt it was the compressor going. I'm having it looked at by a mechanic this week but wanted to have an idea of what I can expect to hear so that I'm not being forced to do work that I don't absolutely need right now. I should know by Friday if it's definitely the compressor or something else. Thanks dallasman999 and youdoit.

Are you sure the noise you are hearing is not belt slip?try this, with engine running a/c off look at the a/c compressor while you are looking at the compressor get someone else to switcna/c on you should see the magnetic clutch pull in on the comp. and start spinning with the other pully get the other person to rev the engine you will hear where the noise comes from but watch to see if the inner clutchkeeps spinning.if it hesitates ,stops and starts again then she is on the way to seizing if not you just find the belts are slipping

The compressor belt needs to be tightened a bit to stop the skreeching. The worse that can happen is the compressor could lock up, throw the belt and other belts and leave you stranded, other then that it could spit out metal and pollute the rest of the system causing a more expensive repair bill.

1997 Nissan 4 cylinder truck AC works excellent throwing snowballs cold air, then it will blow hot air. Relay switch and clutch has been replaced....Did not fix problem!

sounds like compressor isn't working properly or heater vacuum is opening vent to heater core.try turning on ac and if it cuts on and off repeatedly every few seconds the freon level is not correct or high pressure switch may not be working make sure radiator fan comes on when ac is on.if all this is working properly check vacuum hoses to heater may be opening vent doors to heater.hope this helps

The air conditioner turns on but the air is not cold. I tried recharging the freon but the guage says that it's already full. WHat should I do?

Is your car's compressor working? to check it turn you AC on and observe the front of the compressor, the clutch will make an audible click and the center of the compressor should rotate.

1999 Nissan Altima GXE, AC is intermittently blowing warm air. I have recharged the Freon, I have replaced both belts, and still blowing warm air...Ideas? Options?

check pressure it may have leaked out already, also pressure test will tell if compressor is bad or other leaks, u can put dye in system and look for leaks yourself availible in most part stores, look at front of vehicle and look at condesor and see if any obvious damage

A/C not working

it sounds line a faulty ptrssure switch. find the cylinder where the AC hoses go to and you will see a two wire plug. unplug it and use a small jumper and jump the wires. if the clutch on the compressor comes on, then you have a bad switch. most auto parts store will carry the switch. Never herd of the filter issue
