If not the gas cap try the fuel lines. Smell around for strongest smell and start there. Don't use a lighter or any open flame as a light source.;)

Hi Ed.
this is all i could find at the moment.
Gas Cap Causing Gasoline Smell in Car. I know it may seem obvious, but a loose or missing gas cap can cause a fuel smell in your vehicle. You could even have a faulty gas cap that is leaking fumes. A faulty gas cap can also cause the check engine light to illuminate with a DTC on newer cars.

NO NO NO.....GO TAKE YOUR VEHICLE TO A SMOG STATION AND ASK THEM TO TEST THE GAS CAP FOR YOU. VISUALLY LOOKING AT A GAS CAP WILL NOT TELL YOU GOOD OR BAD. THEY CHARGE 10.00 AND WILL TELL YOU IF THE GAS CAP IS LEAKING. DONE IT TOO MANY TIME WITH DAIMLER CHRYSLER.

Blow by is what you are describing coming out of the oil fill cap. A little is normal, it all depends on the internal condition of the engine. I would not be to quick to say that you have glow plug issues. I would look at replacing the cam censor on the 7.3 engine there is a recall from ford for this on some model year 7.3 liter diesels

Gas smell

I had a similar problem with a 2000 Kia Sportage. The check engine light came on all the time. Part of the problem seemed to be the fuel cap having high pressure. Then one fine day I smelled gas fumes from the rear of the vehicle. After removing the fuel pump cover in the rear behind the seats, I found gas coming from a hose from the tank. I then (sometime later) I found a crack in another hose. The hose was from the filler neck. It caused a lack of vapor pressure and a smell. The check engine light now was off.

My 1996 buick skylark has gas leaking into the oil. What is causing this?

The most common causes are a faulty injector or fuel pressure regulator.
If one of the injectors is not closing, it will allow liquid gas to flow into the cylinder and past the rings.
If the regulator fails, it will allow liquid gas into the intake.

I started it I put gas and it smelled like a burnt metal smell and I turned off then it wouldn't start. When it finally did start I couldn't shift past 2nd gear. I was already low on oil.

Yup! Running it low on oil can definitely cause a "burnt metal smell". It can also totally destroy the engine before you can ever smell it.

It sounds like something that needs to be checked by a professional auto repair technician to me.

I have a 2004 6cyl. trailblazer EXT. My check engine light has been coming on then going off for quite some time. Had catalytic converter replaced 2 years ago, put on new gas cap a year ago, and...

More than likely, you have a failed fan clutch. That is a frequent problem on the 4.3 I6 engine. It will cause a roaring noise and "vibration" and allow the engine to overheat at low road speeds. As far as your check engine light and other driveablity problems, it may or may not be associated. Have someone with a code reader check it. The TrailBlazers were infamous for electrical gremlins.

My "Check Engine Light" has gone on periodically

From what you are describing i feel you might be having an bad EGR valve..It only causes the rough idle and shaking and fuel smell in exhaust..It can also cause back firing. Does it happen? Also do you hear any popping noise from exhaust?
