Question about Mercedes-Benz C-Class

1 Answer

I have a 1999 C230 Mercedes Kompressor, automatic transmission. The gear selector can be moved from park down through reverse, neutral and to drive, but refuses to move to the left to 4th. I removed the center console to raveal a "black box" which the gear selector enters. this "box", for lack of a better term, has linkage underneath which goes to the transmission, an eletrical connection, and two springs. I don't know how to open it, I'm certain something is broken or malfunctioning inside. The car has 90K miles. Anyone have experience or ideas with this problem?

Hello drtonyg... This is an electronic shifter controler on the C230...Almost every time they fail the shifter assy. needs replaced as a whole unit....There have been some techs that have tried to clean and repair the shifter assembly and reuse it but most attempts fail..You can disconnect the shift linkage from the shifter assembly underneath the vehicle and then see if your shifter moves all the way(this would eliminate any shifter assembly failures)
Good luck, i hope this helps...please rate me a fixya.

2004 Mercedes-Benz C230 kompressor warning gauge Battery / Alternator needs to be service.

check your volt gauge on the dash. if it's working properly, then your car is throwing a bad code. if the battery looks as though it's taking more than 14 volts, or less than 10, you have a problem.

When driving at 15 miles, the car is usually on second gear, when pressing the gas pedal, one of 3 things happen, it easier feels as a little jump occured, or an increase in RPM, that settles down shortly...

I would suggest a service of the automatic transmission where the filter will be cleaned, bands tightened and new transmission fluid put in. the autotransmission is often forgotten about in our car servicing.
Good Luck
