Question about 1995 Ford Windstar

1 Answer

There is a piece hanging down behind the passenger tire, it is broke and I think it runs across to the other tire. Is it a sway bar? A stabilizer bar? Because it shakes the car and my steering wheel when I drive.

Is the sway bar on a 2002 PT Cruiser necessary? Can it be removed without causing any future problems?

While it can be done I don't think there is a person who would recommend it. Regardless of if it is the front or the rear, they both do a lot to stabilize the car in a turn. The sway bar basically ties one side of the car to the other so it doesn't 'sway' too much during a turn. If you are making a hard left turn the car wants to lean left as well, picking up the right side of the car. The sway bar prevents this.
So, while the car will still run and may even seem like it is driving ok, it will be unsafe.

Can I drive a Pontiac Grand Prix with a broken rear stabilizer safely?

By rear stabilizer, do you mean trailing arm or sway bar? If you have a busted trailing arm, I highly advise against driving. This is the bar that runs from the wheel hub transversely toward the front of the car and attaches to the frame. However, a busted rear sway bar, which runs transversely across the vehicle and runs along side the leaf spring, isn't as severe of an problem. You will just run into spongy turning issues.

When I drive over a bump I'm the toad a immideately hear a rattling noise come from the rear of the car??????

Look under your car for a sway bar. The ends of this bar are held by 1 bolt on each side along with plastic bushings. The swaybar should be visible hanging straight across the rear differential cover. They are subject to rust and breakage, and aftermarket parts are available. They may be also called "Swaybar links".

Check for noise from your rear seatbelts. Sometimes the ends get pushed under the seat and they rattle when the car shakes. Also check the spare tire. The jack on your spare tire can be touching the rim and will rattle. Sometimes the jacks on Crown Vics and its sister, the Grand Marquis are mounted separately behind the carpet on the passengers' quarterpanel. They are held by a twist screw and it can back off over time.

I hope my solutions help you find your problem. Thanks for using Fixya.

Safety says i need sway bar bushings.what and where are these?

the sway bar is a bar that runs acrossed the front of the van from strut to strut. It is bolted to the cradel and then has links that run from the bar to the strut to increase stability. The sway bar bushings are rubber mounts that hold the bar down to the cradel. The bar runs though the mounts one each side where the bar and the cradel meet. If they are wore out you will normally hear a clucking noise from the front end when you hit bumps. To remove and replace them there is two bolts that hold a steel cap on top of them on each side. Remove the cap from both sides then the rubber mounts will have a split in them so you can get them off the bar. To install them is just the reverse of the removal. Good luck! 4 thumbs up is appeciated if this helps.

Part missing behind front passenger tire that goes from a elbow bar to the tire base but it still can be driven it just viabrates real bad

Sounds like the sway bar end link but it win't make the car vibrate. The links can be bought one at a time but the one on the other side will look just like it and could be worn out too. The sway bar keeps the car from leaning over in turns and makes the car handle better. vibration caqn come from bad tires on down,

What is the purpose of the swine bar? The bar right by the tire. it has broke in my vehicle.

You mean the sway bar? If so, the sway bar or roll bar, or sometimes called the stabilizer bar. The sway bar has two functions.
  1. To prevent body roll or lean in a turn.
  2. It is used to control the handling of the vehicle and is tuned to your specific vehicle based on many characteristics.
You most definitely need to replace the broken sway bar. A vehicle with a broken sway bar is not a safe vehicle. The handling is not what it should be and this can be dangerous if you have to make a quick maneuver. Replace it, ASAP.

1995 Ford Taurus stabilizer bars cause rear end of car to ''sway''.

If you are any kind of car savy then you can do this yourself. Go to your local parts store and buy the stabalizer link kits. The stabalizer links are located behind the tires and bolt to the struts at the top and the stabalizer bar on the bottom. You don't need any special tools for this project and the stabalizer bars will cost you anywhere from 30-65 dollars a piece.
