What bolts are being used to hold on the caliper? i thought it was a torx but it didnt seem to grip quite right

Grand caravan caliper bolt size


They are located right behind the caliper. Some use hex bolts, some use Allen bolts and some use Torx bolts. My 2006 caravan has 7mm in the front and T-45 in the rear.

more than likely the two small bolts will release caliper so you can put new pads in if you not familiar with doing brakes i would not go at them

How easy is it to fit front brake pads on a peugeot 405 .


Take off wheel and support car, unbolt the 13mm bolt that holds the caliper to the slide (you may need a thin spanner or pliers to hold the slide if it spins) twist the caliper to push the piston in a bit and slide the caliper off, use a "g" clamp or similar to push the piston back all the way, be carefull of the thin rubber boot. pull out the pads and replace them with any shims, new or original in the right places, slide on caliper and tighten bolts. There might be a different way of holding the calliper, top and bottom and to the side facing the well of the wheel some models have a small angle section that slides between the caliper and its frame, held in by 1 or2 clips that look like the end of a hair grip, pull out the clip and slide out the angle slide and the caliper will wriggle out, proceed as above.

I'm trying to remove right front caliper to change pads, and can't loosen caliper bolts. (One of them has a rounded head!) How does it come off?


Vehicle on hard flat surface. Two jack stands under the frame towards the front, front in the air, wheel chocks placed behind the rear wheels, parking brake on.

Wheels/tires removed, turn the wheels to the right when working on the right side, to the left when working on the left side.

Don safety glasses, and use a propane torch to heat the area on the brake caliper, where the brake caliper bolt goes into. Use caution as brake fluid is flammable. Keep the flame moving back, and forth, on the brake caliper area for the caliper bolt.

You'll have to experiment in this task. You won't be able to get this area cherry red, and you DON'T want to! Heat the area, tap on the area with a hammer, then try to remove the bolt. Keep doing this procedure until the bolt starts to move. See below for more detail.

You are heating cast iron, which expands more rapidly than the steel bolt. Now take a ball peen hammer, use the flat end, and TAP along the area you heated. DON'T beat on it, just medium taps.

Don leather gloves. Clamp a large pair of curved jaw Vise Grips on that bolt head. Clamp it as tight as you can. Tap the area once more with the hammer, then see if you can get the bolt to turn.

Viewing TOWARDS the brake caliper from the outside of your truck, the Vise Grips should go DOWN to the Right. The bolts have Right handed threads.
Turn to the right to tighten, to the left to loosen.
But you are on the opposite side.

Remember that the bolt head is on the backside of the caliper, therefore you have to orient the direction you need to turn it, to loosen it.

Once you remove a bolt, move it to a safe place to cool down. Do not quench it in water. You will anneal the bolt by doing this, thereby softening the bolt. This = No!
Suggest you use the proper thread tap, and clean the holes of the brake caliper, and the proper thread die to clean the threads of the bolt, before reinstalling.

Removing calipers from a 1997 T-Bird..


Those bolts should be allen head bolts and NOT torx (star shaped). With a torx bit in that hole all u will do is mess up a torx bit and the flats for the allen wrenches to grab onto. Try using a 10 or 12 mm( cant remeber which it is) allen head wrench.

Remove caliper


There should be a large bolt (it may have an internal allen or torx head) that runs through the top of the caliper to hold it to the steering arm. Remove this, and the second bolt and you should be able to pull the the caliper free from the rotor. Use a C-Clamp to depress the caliper and slide your pads into the caliper, place the caliper on the rotor, and reinstall your bolts.

There are 2 bolts on the "inside" on the caliper towards the bottom they use an allen wrench socket.

Front brake pads


Just did this tonight... 7/21/08

You need a torx head T-55 Star Socket to remove the caliper bolt(s) and a large 3/4 in preferably with a 1/2 dr and large breaker bar or torque wrench with a 1/2 in dr. to remove the knuckle bolts. I should've taken pictures, but I did not. After studying this exact issue for an hour or so, I finally got everything to click. Steps as I proceeded. Loosen the top caliper nut using the T-55 torx bit, this will take some doing, if possible, use a breaker bar or something comparable, I used a standard 3/8 in. socket wrench and about a foot long hollow metal tube on the end as the breaker and after some muscle work (ouch!!) got it loose. Now there are 2 bolts that hold the caliper in place that need to come out. I used a 3/4 in socket on a 1/2 breaker bar to get these to break. I don't have the exact torque specs to put these back on, but I went about 40lbs on the knuckle bolts and closer to 80lbs on the caliper torx head screw. Once you have the caliper torx head bolt loose and the other 2 nuts off, you can rotate the caliper. Using a C-Clamp, compress the caliper so that it is completely compressed. Now, remove the torx head bolt and the pad assembly will swing out, at this point, you can remove the old pads and clips if you are replacing them as well. Reverse the order for installation using Lock-tite and the caliper grease you get from the parts store. I hope I don't have to mention removing the tires, using jack stands and being completely safe under there. Good Luck. The first side took me about 3 hours considering time and studying, the second side took about half an hour after already knowing what to do.. It gets easier each time you do it.

So far, I have replaced 2 fuel pumps (at home) first one took about 7 hours, second time around, only took about 2 hours. Front and Rear brake jobs. numerous small items, now I'm looking at a blinker switch (problem with left turn signal... rapid click, no light).. Also, the dash panel either needs repaired or replaced as the fuel gage is constantly up and down. If you or someone else has a suggestion here, I would appreciate it.
