Top radiator hose connects to engine through a fitting which is held on by 2 capscrews approx 1/2 inch or 13 mm. Remove the screws then pop the fitting loose and t-seat will be exposed. New one comes with a new gasket. Clean mating faces before reassembly and don’t install new stat upside down.

SOURCE: 2002 Pontiac Grand Prix Thermostat

as you face the engine the thermostat bell is on the right (drivers side) Follow the radiatoe hose. Remove the two bolts and raise the bell still attatched to the hose. the thermostat is there with the rubber seal. You can gently pry the thermostat out with a screwdriver or something similar. Put in new thermostat be sure it is the same as the old one, and then replace or change the seal (be sure it is the smae size and thickness as the old one as I got the wrong size from Napa) Then replace the bell, and tighten, but not over tighten. I hope this helps!

SOURCE: replace a thermostat on a 2002 pontiac grand am 4 cyl

The thermostat will be located where the top radiator hose meets the block. You must disconnect the house and remove the housing that the hose connects to. Should be 2 or 3 bolts.

SOURCE: need to replace thermostat iin 2003 pontiac grand am 3.4

The thermostat is located on the back of the engine under the exhaust crossover, you will have to take some of the small water lines loose to gain access to the bolts and it helps to have a short wobble extension for the ratchet for this. The bottom bolt on the housing doesn't have to come all the way out to get the housing off but I know the top one has to come off. This can be done with the exhaust crossover in place but you will have so much more room if you remove this piece. It is very tight so pay attention pulling it out and reinstalling it to keep from pinching the gasket.

Replaced water pump and its still getting hot 1999 pontiac grand am

Thermostat is stuck closed or your electric fan is not cutting on.I would replace the thermostat first and if it still overheats then the coolant temperature sensor is more than likely why the fan is not cutting on.

My '94 Pontiac Grand Am is overheating. I gave it engine coolant, but the problems still persists. What is wrong with my car?

Your likely looking at a thermostat problem (cheap to replace) or a electric cooling fan concern, I would replace the thermostat before any other repairs
