The only things this could be are bad parts or faulty installation and the only things that would get that hot are brakes and bearings.

42re>>aw4 swap

Far s I know it fits...make sure you have the correct torque converter for the unit you want to install. Only thing I'm not positive of is if the transfer case fits but pretty sure it does.Upi may need to change some linkage too. I have a AW4 in my 93 and I know there isn't a different engine configuration.

How much would a rebuilt transmission cost for a 97 Jeep Grand

In Cnd dollars somewhere in between $1400 and $1800 plus taxes with a 1 year guaranty.

Personnally, as a owner of two grand cherokee 97 and 2000 I would never pay this amount of money unless you are planning to die with it.

Personnally my plan would be get a used one at $350 cnd $, with a 90 days guaranty, get a new filter and pan gasket and shaft seals installed, + pay approx $300 cnd for installation.

It's up to you to make the final decision.

By the way, there is a reason why yours is burned or faultive.
I would recommend to check radiator condition, follow recommandations about the appropriate oil and have an oil transmission radiator cooler installed if you tow heayy weight on a regular basis.

Sorry for my english,

Dan
