Question about 2001 Acura MDX

1 Answer

I have a 2004 Acura MDX now at 96,000 and the timing belt broke. Anyone hear of such a thing? I replaced the original at 62K and I am now at 96K and while I was driving the timing belt broke. They told me that they would have to replace the timing belt and then called back to tell me that there is damage to the valves and possible damage to your cylinder head and pistons. Cost is estimated at $3,315. I just about died. I wanted to have it towed to the dealership but the towing company convinced me to not charge for towing and take me to this shop. I hate it when they take advantage of women. The questions I have are: Does the 2004 Acura MDX have an inteerference motor? Are the valves really damaged? Did they have to replace the timing belt to even determine if the motor was damaged? There is a salvage yard that has a motor with 60K miles on it for $1320 and cost to install would be 1,200. Should I do that or have them rebuild my engine?

Yes timing belts break and cause the problems you are saying

Does the 2004 Acura MDX have an interference motor? Yes

Are the valves really damaged? Yes, most likely bent

Did they have to replace the timing belt to even determine if the motor was damaged?
No, but it is really easy to determine that it is damaged once you try to run it with the belt on

There is a salvage yard that has a motor with 60K miles on it for $1320 and cost to install would be 1,200. Should I do that or have them rebuild my engine?
I would go with the 60k engine, it is cheaper and will give you a engine with fewer miles on it. I would make sure that they replace the timing belt on it though they should already know to do that. Let me know how this turns out.

Why is the rear air conditioner on Acura MDX 2004 not working?

If like older style vans it will have second compressor at back of vehicle this probably needs a charge or new compressor

Now the other part is if it has running ducts you need to see if any cracked or split from front to back
Run snake cam threw air ducts wont cost anything for a look at any mechanic shop
Belts barrings and tensioners check out
Pull off belt and turn ac by hand if theres resistance replace compressor
Your dryer on system could need a clean out and cabin filter

2005 mdx squels when starting, how do I tighten serpentine belt.

It is probably related to your starter motor. I am just about to replace mine (2004 mdx) with a rebuilt and expect that will solve the problem.

If you overtighten the serpentine belt, you will destroy your power steering pump, so be careful.
